It seems everywhere I go I see worn, tattered and carelessly displayed US Flags. It disgusts me. I also see people choosing their own reasons for flying it at half-mast and at all heights in between. I see people no longer salute. What's worse, I see large numbers of people on military posts fail to stop and salute at appropriate times when the flag is raised and lowered. People want to display the flag but don't want to properly care for it, store it, fold it, salute it, and truly understand what it represents. So many gave their lives for the nation it represents. I've had to debate whether to call a business our over an improperly displayed or tattered flag several different times. Problem is there is never any guarantee the person in charge would be around. Even in civilian life, I still render proper customs and courtesies when it comes to the flag. Working at the stadium here in Richmond paints a perfect picture of how much respect people give our flag. During the national anthem, our stand ceases all activity. Some fans in attendance will turn around, place their hand over their heart and wait until the anthem concludes. However, I've seen many people just keep on walking, get pissy with my staff because we're not waiting on them or just scroll through their phone. I think many folks have lost sight of how fortunate they are to be living in a country that offers the liberties the US does. I honestly feel that most veterans are more appreciative to be living here than civilians. How a person goes about showing their respect to the flag should be a representation of who they are as an American.
