If the officer was enlisted first, it's the previous rank held, E5 or higher. If not, it's E5 or higher based on a grade determination by HRC.

Based on PME required for grade, and equivalency allowed in AR 600-8-19, OCS and/or BOLC are authorized equivalency for BLC.
There is no equivalency authorized above BLC.
Theoretically, regardless of commissioned rank, they would all revert to SGT unless they held a higher enlisted grade prior to commission, since PME is now (again) required for pin on of rank

SGM (Join to see) that's what all our guidance says. They revert to SGT unless determined by HRC, but HRC doesn't say any situation where it would happen

SFC (Join to see) - I only knew one guy who did this.
In '94 when I was at 3d Bat, a CPT in RGT S3 reverted because "staff time was bullsh*t".
He walked back in as a SGT, and they assigned him right back to RGT S3.
True story.

SGM (Join to see) that's hilarious and sounds 100% like Ranger. The Senior Career Counselor over there once told me, Ranger only care about being a Ranger, and if they can't do that they don't want to do anything else.

By the Service, based on qualifications and needs of the Service. I knew a few Captains that reverted and in some cases were made SSgt or maybe GySgt. Depends on many factors.

MSgt Paul Connors - I'd wonder about that too. Maybe they had greater need for enlisted flight crewmen, and they drew the short straws.

SGM Frank Marsh - Probably reserve officers on active duty and didn't have college degrees.

Each case is different based on the Officer’s circumstances; pre-commission rank, highest attained rank, etc...
