When did you find out your infantry mos when you got to basic and was it a random pick?

Shipping out on august 19th and starting basic the 30th and was wondering when i would find out my infantry mos and if it's a random selection. Don't really care if im 11c or 11b just curious about other infantry recruits experience in basic. I've heard some say its complete random like the drill sergeants will just pick and I've also heard asvab scores have something to do with it.

I enlisted for 11B. I wanted 84B but the school was closed they were moving. After 3 years I reuped for 84B and retired as a 25V3H. Best job ever.

I signed an 18X contract at 20 with no athletic background and around 132lbs wet...so I knew I was going 11B even after failing A&S. Assuming nothing has changed with 30th AG and you have a 11X contract...it all depends on what's needed when you get picked up and start basic. They'll tell you soon enough.

Get good at pushups. The Army is on easy mode when you can bump out 75 pushups with no problems.

Joe Murphy Did you not choose your MOS when you went to MEPS?

To those at large, why would you allow the Army to tell what part of the infantry to join.

It literally has nothing to do with asvab scores, or anything really other than what Company is picking up trainees when it’s your time to head to a training unit out of reception. If the company that’s picking you up trains mortarmen, you’ll be an 11C. If they don’t you’ll be an 11B. It’s just based on when you finish your in processing and issue at reception and what company is picking trainees up when it’s your turn to head to a training unit.

You’ll find out what MOS you’ll be at your training unit as well, some dude in your cycle is probably gonna ask the Drill Sergeants if y’all are going to be 11B or 11C and they might tell y’all

In 1972 I enlisted for Airborne Infantry, in November that same year I extended for one year to go to Vietnam, but got the DMZ Korea instead.

When I went through we heard the same rumors that higher GT scores were what made the difference... No idea, I just got told I was an 11C congrats now do push-ups. Either way in my 4.5 years of active duty I did plenty of mortar fire missions and plenty of standard infantry patrols. Just know it's out of your hands and make the most of it either way.

Joe Murphy, when I started infantry AIT on 17JAN70, I had no idea where I was headed. The instructors called out a bunch of names (mine being one of them) and told us we were heavy weapons. That’s the first time I knew. I qualified on the 81 mm mortar and became an 11C.

I went through back in '92 with option 40 contract as 11x. If I remember correctly it was half way through the actual Infantry AIT portion when we were told you guys are staying 11B and you guys are now going to go though 11C school. Either way I have seen this happen. We got an 5'0 tall 11B in our unit that got assigned to the mortar section and became an 11C. Good luck and suck it up. Basic training is a game / learning experience. Do the right thing pay attention, and foster "TEAM WORK" And remember RLTW

Their gonna stamp your file when you get off the bus at 30th. You'll end up in a "line". Then when they decide what lines are going to what training companies thatll decide it. I found out when I realized all the national guard guys that were sitting around me were 11c.

When I enlisted they tried to talk me out of Infantry and into electronics. But I prevailed and enlisted as 11B10. I chose my MOS. But that was in 1980. Interesting note, in 1983 when the Bradley came to Germany we had to sign an MOS change from 11B to 11M. If you didn't want to go Mech (airborne and ranger qualified didn't) they would reassign you.

I found out when I was at 30th the day I was leaving for OSUT, all the NCOs at 30th had everyone line up in columns by name and said "column 1 through 7 you're all 11B, columns 8 through 10 you're all 11C." That wa show it worked for me back in 2012 I don't know how they do it now

Ground pounder are 11B, DI does not assign you, check your contract / enlistment paperwork it will state your mos!

11X when basic started, about 3 weeks in, they checked GT scores, chose who was going 11C, 11B, and 11H.

Asvab matters because of the technical needs of being 11C. Unlike artillery, 11C's create fire direction specialists out of hyde. Artillery has a totally separate MOS for fire direction.

When I signed up it was already known to me on the enlightenment papers that I was going to be 11B and going to be in a COHORT and going to the 7th I.D at Ft. Ord . When I got to Benning we were handed different paperwork that said 11 xray. The Drills told us not to worry because we were going to be Infantryman . During AIT the Drills asked if anyone wanted to be 11C or 11M ( i think that is a tow gunner) No one volunteered so the Drill said "fuck it call so and so batt tell them they have to produce some. I am going to make me some hard ass motherfuckers. " None of us had to go 11C or 11M. Just understand this was 25 years ago and things have changed. Hope this helps.

I signed the dotted line to be an 11X.
All through Basic, everyone in company was Infantry, period. No designation. You're just a grunt.
Now, come basic graduation and either before graduation or after you come back from your "weekend liberty" they will inform you which designation you are.
Most platoons in my unit were11B, my platoon was 11C. If they still have OSUT (one station unit training) duty stations/basic training.

Enlisted as 11X went to 9th Inf. Div. as a 11X then asigned as 11B. Then in 93 my Orders for Sgt got posted all of a sudden I was a 11M20... WTF, the Army does what it wants for 11 series. Even if it is in writing.
