When is it correct to salute with your left hand?

As stated previously if your right hand is injured a left handed salute is authorized, as is if you have lost your right hand/arm. The most often left handed salute in the Navy is when the Bosin is piping a dignitary or VIP aboard or ashore. They pipe with their right hand and salute with the left.

This is an old board question, and I think the answer is "when your right arm is broken or injured so that you can't salute with your right arm." Seems like there may be another reason, but I don't recall what it is.

I wouldnt as History has shown that the left hand was always used for toiletry purposes, there may be special circumstances but I would tend to steer away from them.them. Ok now Im gonna look into this that my comment has been made

SGT Hanner, I once wrote a Military Trivia column for Stars and Stripes...will see if I can find some copies. Modern post WWII rules are very different from pre-Civil War..the Old Guard tradition is an example (it's a tradition). People tend to get confused between customs and traditions, legends, and actual regulations. For example, there are many erroneous beliefs perpetuated by unofficial "Handbooks" study guides and so on. If you want examples, can do. One was the "left handed salute". Really fun ones involve saluting a MOH recipient, flags at "half mast" and my personal favs, "the "Truck" and the related "Suicide" myth....

A buddy of mine and I were strolling across the compound one day out in the boonies, and my buddy properly executed the right hand salute as we came upon our platoon leader, who was a good guy. I, being on the left, matched my buddy's salute with the snappiest left hand salute I could muster, whereupon the LT was left trying to remember which hand to return our salute with. He just laughed and told me to never confuse him again.

Saw a left handed AF salute today watching film on the F-5, blond female with white tee shirt and OG pants on left side of the AC. She was directing it out of revetment and directing up the AC had to turn left, so As it got to the turn point she executed a left hand salute and dropped the left hand to indicate go left. As turn was almost completed she gave the right hand thumbs up and walked out of the camera range. I'd always seen the salute and thumbs up be the last thing and the person was at attention and gave salute and then thumb up. Maybe she had been Navy in a prior life, as I often see them salute with left hand while still giving the run up with the right and then give the thumb with right as he knelt and points to the shooter to fire.

There are only 2 people authorized to salute with the left hand, while in uniform, in the US Army. They are both members of the 3rd INF Regt, "The Old Guard". They are the Commander of the "Commanders Guard" and the Drum Major of the Drum and Fife Corps.

No one else in the US Army is authorized to salute with the left hand under any circumstance. If your right hand is hurt or missing, the greeting of the day is acceptable as a salute.

When required as a civilian to render military courtesy but you still want to send a message to the Soviets? ;) An explanation is probably required for that one. I was a civilian/contractor/technical specialist in West Berlin. Under the SOFA, I was there under orders and as a member of the Berlin Brigade. When driving to and from West Germany, we would pass through Checkpoints Alpha and Bravo (lesser known than the more famous Checkpoint Charlie), and there was a corresponding Soviet checkpoint to process through. At the Soviet checkpoint, the driver would exit the vehicle, approach a Soviet sentry on duty there, receive a salute, and respond. (We were told that they were all GRU) After he examined our travel documents, he would return them, exchange salutes again, and we would then enter a building for processing of those documents. Once that was finished, we would return to the sentry, repeat the whole process, and drive off - only to repeat the process at the other end of the corridor. I conveniently "forgot" all my training, and always saluted with my left hand.

I see a lot of replies here about an injured right arm. When I broke my right wrist in a HMMWV accident, and had to wear a sling for several weeks, I was told to skip the salute and just give a verbal getting.

When I was recovering from shoulder surgery and my right arm was in a sling, I simply gave a verbal greeting. I was stopped once for not saluting, but it was not because I failed to salute with my left hand. It was because the person altogether missed the fact that my right arm was in a sling and expected a right-hand salute. More of a lack of his situational awareness than anything...

Only if it's missing or injured to where you can't render a proper salute. When I was at Travis my roomie was walking across the base in a thunderstorm. Head down evidently he met a 2-star staff car and didn't salute. He got back to his duty section and three hours later he was called down to the 1st Shirts office to sign a Letter of Reprimand. The Brig Gen had his Staff NCO track this guy down and then jump his ass.

Although saluting is allowed with the left hand when the right hand is either missing or injured, it is dependent on the installation's commander. While an outpatient at WRAMC (before its move to Bethesda) with a right arm injury I looked it up. That week, I walked past a LTC and gave him a good left hand salute (better to be safe than sorry). Made it less than 2m before he stopped me asking why I saluted left handed. According to this LTC, left handed saluting is at the installation commander's discretion and it was not done at WRAMC. Ironically, 3 days later I took a good 25 minute ass-chewing from a female butter-bar for only rendering customary greetings and not saluting. It should be noted that in both instances my right arm was in a brace and slung.

The Hand salute is given by the right hand, there is no provision in the U.S. Army to salute with the left hand. Although there is a regulation for saluting, the how to's and for are covered in the Drill and Ceremonies FM, what we all need to remember it that saluting is a courtesy, usually accompanied by the greeting of the time "good morning Sir" if one is unable to salute due to injury etc. then the greeting would be appropriate, If a person that deserves a salute and does not receive one because one is unable and insists on a salute, then I would question their leadership capabilities.

I don't believe it ever is, at least in the Army. If you are unable to use your right hand for some reason, you can simply return a superior officer's greeting or come to attention for other occasions. Granted its been a LONG time since I studied the finer points of military courtesy.

I'm not sure about a left handed salute? I do know, if your hands are full, you do not have to give a salute, but you still must show respect? Actually had a butterball get all over me, my arms were completely full, which it would have been harder to drop everything and salute him, he was livid..He looked like he had just been commissioned?

BMs who are piping someone aboard must do so with their right hand, so salutes are made with the left hand. If you are unable to use the right hand due to injury you can use the left hand, but are not required to render a salute.

As an Army M.P. standing the gates it was hilarious to snap a quick, crisp, left-handed salute to butter bar Lt. They would proudly respond with their own left-handed salute back and start driving off. Almost invariably they would look back with an even more than usual puzzled, confused, "wait, what?" look on their face. When they saw me smiling broadly at them as they drove away, they knew they had been had, lol.

When I was on my cane I would stop and salute if my left hand was empty. Always stopped for my bde commander and saluted, but because my right hand was not hurt and just busy I simply have the proper greeting and never had an issue

sniper search sir! lol we had a brand new second LT in my unit who insisted on being saluted in the field on his first field problem with the unit. Until a couple of us passed him and saluted (left handed) and stated Sniper search sir he stopped us and asked us why we did that. We told him why. That a field problem is to be treated as if you are in combat and if he wanted his troupes to salute him in combat he would be a target for a sniper. That was the last time he was saluted in the field.

Navy/ Marine Corps permits a left handed salute when you are a guidon bearer who is behind the formation or if you have a right hand/ arm injury that prevents you from saluting properly.
A guidon bearer who is in front of the formation is required to render a salute by tilting the guidon forward until it is parallel to the deck.

If your arm is injured. I had one incident where my salute and greeting was questioned by an officer. I addressed a group of six 2nd LT's with "Good morning gentlemen!", they all returned the salute but a conversation ensued afterward. They took my word for it on the reg. but I could imagine them dressing down the next Marine that didn't greet them the same way. :))

By regulation, there is only one person in the US Army Authorized to salute with his left hand, it's the Director of the Army Band in the MDW. All other personnel are only authorized to salute with the right hand. Even amputations and injuries are required to salute with the right hand.

in my view, there are no rules for the left hand. It is more common sense if and when your right hand is for any reason 'unavailable', it is best to salute with the left than render no salute al all. Remember, saluting is an earned privilege and a courtesy to our fellow soldiers regardless of rank

When carrying a guideon, not part of a formation. Example: as a guideon bearer you carry the staff in your right hand, but must salute an officer. you would not "dip" the guideon, but salute with your left hand at chest level, palm parallel to the ground.

To salute with you left hand,only two times are authorized in any form of formation. 1. its limited to a Boatswains mate piping a senior officer aboard with the pipe in the right hand and salute with the left hand. (Even going way back to the Bluejacket's Manual I believe) 2. The drum major in the old Guard fife and drum Corp. If not in a formation While under arms at carry arms with a rifle, a salute is made with the left hand across You chest with the finder tips touch the area below the lower end of the bolt or at order arms across to touch with You finger tips the area below and to the rear the front site of the rifle. with a guidon in carry also reach straight across Your chest and the arm should be horizontal to the ground and the finger tips just touch the staff of the guidon At order guidon and not in formation, again across Your body with finger tips touching the inside edge of the guidon (part closest to Your body) This is IAW for Army FM3-21.5 (same with the old FM22-5, Drills and ceremonies) and with the Air Force AFM 36-2203. (Drills and ceremonies) There is no specific authorization to salute with the left hand in the Army or Air Force and the right hand should be empty to render a salute. If a person is missing a right arm most will accept that and its not considered disrespectful but not specifically authorized.

As a Marine you never salute with the left hand. We were not alowed to carry anything not related to our job of duty in our left hand that would hinder our ability to render a proper and "crisp" salute.

When a right handed Bosun is piping aboard a Flag Officer, if the Bosun is left handed naturally the right hand salute would be given.

There are three examples of left hand salutes: The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps Drum Major salutes with left hand, palm outward, as they follow the Revolutionary custom in ceremony; Boatswain's Mate when piping a senior officer on-board in the Navy and Coast Guard as the pipe is held in the right hand; Last but not least, any disabled service member or veteran who is unable to salute with their right may salute with their left.

SGT, can't give you a reference but here I go. You report to pay call back in the days of being paid in cash, you salute the pay officer with your right hand - that pay officer returns a salute left handed. They salute left handed so the right hand can be free for cash and their 45.

I didn't think that there was any reason to salute with the left hand.. I've never seen or heard of that unless you're a new recruit and make that mistake and get quickly admonished..Lol

USCG used to allow it IF you were carrying something under your right arm, that it would be problematic to shift the load to the left to render the proper courtesy - example: A stack of books/manuals. If it was something small and unencumbering, you were expected to shift the item(s) to the left hand, render the salute, and then you could return the item(s) to the right if you desired.

When you are carrying your rifle at right shoulder arms, then a left handed salute can be rendered , left arm and hand parallel to the deck and fingers will go under the charging handle. Thats one example
