When is your favorite time of the year to train? Considering weather, training requirements, amount of daylight available, etc.?

I find that I learn better when I am engaged by the instructor, which means having a good time while learning. I always try to do the same for my troops. What do you do that makes your guys/ gals actually take in and remember vital information that we all know saves lives down the road?

CPT Griff Tatum I love early fall for training, Sep or Oct. You are coming off the Summer heat but still warm at night you only need a poncho liner. The days are still longer and if you want to do night patrolling you can look for nights with half crescent to full moon. Usually not as much rain as during the spring. My best memories are cool evenings/nights/mornings at Fort Knox when I was a cadet/junior officer.

I think the fall is the best time to train! No real distractions from the weather, plus the crisp mornings are refreshing!

Distractions is a good word to use. Most instructors are blind to the weather and say " well this is how it's going to be when you actually perform missions," which is true, but if the learner is so distracted during training, about how much of that training is learned instead of just going through with the motions?

That is exactly right! Anytime you are outdoors, the elements are often unpredictable so I would always take that into consideration and lift and shift if needed to accommodate the training.

Absolutely. There is a huge difference between allotted time to train, and time of training where learning actually took place because the learner is engaged.

If it ain't rainin, you ain't trainin! It never rains on the Infantry, we just walk between the rain drops.

Haha, very funny SGM, and you're right. Although in all reality it sucks. Embrace the suck!

CPT Griff Tatum - Sir, that's about all one could do. I remember one time coming back in from an FTX, muddy, wet. The next morning we had a full lay out inspection. Guess what we did that night.

SGM Mikel Dawson I can think of a few things but the first that comes to mind is go looking for a missing sensitive or inspectable item. Hahaha
