If you are in the California national guard you do not reenlist you extend your contract.
Also there is something called a cross unit extension. When you extend you can pick a unit that is closer to home.

SPC (Join to see) no problem. If you need the memorandum authorizing the CUE let me know. I'll be back in the office tomorrow.

There is always the possibility of negotiating unit locations and MOS reclass. When I extended in 2014, I extended into a signal company as an E5 with a new MOS. It took a while for them to send me to school but I eventually became MOSQ for 25B. Research unit vacancies near your home, reach out to people in the unit and try to get a slot that you can be assigned to, extend and go to school. Don't let people discourage you. Get what you want. Best of luck to you.

In the Marines you submit a re-up package and you could request MOS reassignment, schools and duty station and if an E4 or below often a promotion. Whether they still do all this today, I don't know. I guess it depends on your record and how much they want to retain you.
