Is it where only certain MOSs like infantry are deployed or is every MOS usually involved? I'm new to the army and have a lot of unusual, stupid, or obvious questions so bear with me. I was in a construction/engineering MOS. In 2010, PR governor deployed the NG to patrol with local police department in an effort to reduce the criminal activity in the island. I worked with them for one year. We had some training and a lot of instructions on rules of engagements. So answering your questions, this can be open to other MOS. I think the reason why was because of their clearances they could coordinate with the Feds better on what was going on, in and around Texas. That is just a guess on my part though.

Typically the NG uses Infantry for securing areas after a weather disaster (patrolling), sand bagging for a flood, forest fire line operations.............thats been my observation though it could be biased on just what I personally have observed.

For riots they are used in various ways and most Infantry Units have Civil Disturbance training. Sometimes are they used in conjunction with the Police for riots, sometimes not. It is usually a pure NG command for riots with the NG firmly in charge of the chain of command at the lower level up to a specific level. They are typically used in place of the Police when things get too violent for the Police or the Police are undermanned.
