After some difficulties during basic training (medical) I was discharged and spent two years trying to recover and figure out where I was going. My best laid plans were laid to rest because I thought I was going to be a Marine for quite some time. That didn't end up being the case. A long fight, assistance from a Senator s office, and a very sharp recruiter, helped assist with getting that issue taken care of.

Enter the National Guard, where I am nearing the end of my enlistment and I will not be reinlisting. I came on as an aircraft mechanic. I worked hard, learned my profession to a T, and finally got promoted to Sergeant. I was living the dream with a 6-4 Tech job working 4 10s, every Monday and Federal Holiday off, making good money for someone with only 2 years of college. The government shut down occurred, and I decided that my pay check would no longer hinge on the musings and whims of political figures. I bit the bullet, sunk a ton of money into flight training, and now I am living and doing the profession I always dreamed about.

I now teach people how to fly and fly corporate jets for a living. If you had asked when I first signed my enlistment papers if I d be where I am now, I d flat out tell you "no". If I wasn't a pilot I d probably still be a technician working on Apaches. I would definitely say that my career within the military has definitely been a huge factor in my success-the traits and character qualities learned within the Army has proven to translate into the civilian sector, and the mechanic side of the house DEFINITELY attributed about 50% of my success in a very rigorous and difficult flight training program. Long story short-I think a career has its seasons and its times: knowing whether or not you are going to make a career out of it depends on where you are at in your career. I wasn't sure about making a career when I entered the Navy, but the longer I was in and the more I experienced and grew, the more I enjoyed my contribution and felt like it was purposeful. The family was not enamored with frequent and long deployments so I gave in and separated after my first hitch. A really good Navy buddy stayed in contact and convinced me to join the reserves, the rest is history. I found myself back on active duty and making concessions for both career and family. Its been a bit of a longer road to where I am today, and my peers are a decade younger than me, but that's OK as it keeps me young myself. It has become a lifetime career with only 5-years out of uniform with two separate careers, enlisted and commissioned, and when I retire in a few years from now it will be strange to not wear a uniform everyday, no doubt! All I really knew at that time is I wanted to be my own person with my own money and not being an "indentured servant" to my parents anymore.

It took me over two years to really get the grasp of military life. By time my first reenlistment came I was like, "My friends are here...I have steady income...we work like slaves, but party like Rockstars....Why leave?" I re-uped for two years...then two more...and so on...and so on...and so on..... Always taking the minimum...always ensuring my finances were in order prior to re-up time.

Throughout these years I developed a hobby called "Soldering". Never looking at my service as a career, but as a hobby. To me, a career is a job. The Army was never that for me. Nothing beats teaching and coaching Soldiers.

Finally, after 14 years of service, the time came for me to reenlist "indefinitely". I was still skeptical of committing for that length of time. Then I had a Soldier I was trying to convince to do her first reenlistment. For months she told everyone she's getting out. When I asked her, without hesitation she said to me, "I'll re-up if you do it with me." So on the Army's birthday in 2001 we both donned our Class A uniform and reenlisted together. A very proud moment for me. I'm also pros to say that ten or so years later, she became an Army Nurse.

So to end my babbling, "NO".
