When you say that you have an invisible injury, do people ask you what it is?

I avoid talking about it in general public. If they aren't family, friend or military it just becomes a debate of opinions because they don't understand. The thing is this situation causes stress for me personally which makes my symptoms worse. I don't need it so I avoid it when ever possible.

Many injuries do not leave visible scars especially when we are wearing clothes. Scars on my arms and legs and face are clearly visible but the deep injuries to my heart, spine, brain, and intestines are not clearly visible SPC Margaret Higgins.
Most reasonable people realize that most serious injuries are best viewed by x-ray, CT Scan, MRI.
I don't know anybody with an invisible injury. I know many people who don;t have clearly visible injuries though.

SPC Margaret Higgins - mental illness is nor really an invisible injury unless it is directly related to an injury.
I have several relatives who have been diagnosed with mental illness - one of my sons was diagnosed with psychosis. Two of my maternal side cousins spent time in metal institutions because of mental illness.
I have another son who has a significant head injury which has disabled his ability to smell but he has no mental illness associated with it.

SPC Margaret Higgins - You are 100% correct! Mental illness is "invisible" to those who don't know you, if you have no physical signs. :-)

LTC Stephen F., now I understand what you meant. You are absolutely correct: My mental illness is Not related to an injury incurred in the service or otherwise.

Thank you, SSG (Join to see). I have no physical signs. Most who know me or not, do not know that I am 'mentally ill'. I don't act in a 'mentally ill' fashion- what ever that is. ;)

It is nothing I discuss openly. Honestly, people either exhibit fear or pity, and I want neither. I just want to be treated like everyone else good bad and indifferent. Frankly, it is not their business what I have to endure.
