The classroom stuff was a breeze. The field portion of it however was pretty hardcore. We did a watered down version of the Q-course out in the field. It was tough leaving the NCO corps but becoming a commissioned officer only meant that I could take the 'Be, Know, Do' I learned as an NCO and factor it into my decisions as an officer. Beautiful place, almost empty, a lot of weird wooden stockades that looked like they were from the 1870's, but freshly painted bright white. Found out years later that is where the Army held a huge mob of Cuban civilian and military prisoners captured in Grenada in Operation Urgent Fury. It was around the time that spring. Was ending and summer was coming in. Most of our training occurred early morning and nighttime. We had temperatures averaging 112 degrees a day, sandstorms with poor visibility, nothing but sand and rocks, random dogs, cats, camels and such wandering about. Our schedule rapidly changed due to the weather. There are firing ranges near by, and we’re close to the Iraqi border, so our days and nights were filled with the sweet sounds of gunfire and rounds going off. We marched everywhere we went. Our SGLs were some of he most informed and highest rated individuals there. And although they were tough, I’m proud to have had them push me through with an iron fist. I made commandants list and scored iron soldier.
