There is nothing for conventional infantry in Virginia. Fort Drum, Bragg, and Campbell are the closest. What you should do is head out to Europe. Either Germany or Airborne in Italy. Off the top of my head I can think of Alaska, Hawaii, Lewis, Irwin as Opfor for NTC rotations, Bliss, Hood, Benning, Stewart, Polk, Drum, Germany, Korea, Campbell, Carson, and Italy. Depending on what schools you have and needs of the army can play a role and where you get sent. If you have a specific duty station in mind I recommend calling branch. Closest assignment to the State would be the Old Guard. Washington D.C. 3rd U.S. Infantry. Honor Guard, Horse & Cassion Platoon, Salute Platoon; (Artillery); however I believe you have to apply and be accepted by the Command. Given the opportunity, I'd choose the 173rd (The HERD!) and Italy. Illustrious, Historical, High Speed/Low Drag and opportunities beyond belief for a young hard charger. Then there is the 25th in Hawaii, the 2nd in Korea, the Infantry School at Benning, the 10th at Drum, the 101st at Campbell, the 82nd at Bragg (Airborne!), NTC in California, NTC East at Polk in Louisiana, the 3rd at Stewart in Georgia. You have lots of opportunities, but the needs of the Service will apply. It doesn't hurt to ask and dream, though. If you are hard set on Virginia, then Ft. Myers is as close as you can get. If you want to be a member of an "Elite" unit, then the 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard) will provide you with all you want and more. "forti et fideli nihil inpossibile" (To the Brave and Faithfull, Nothing is Impossible. Prior to that, as an infantryman I was also at Lewis, Campbell, Knox and Dix. Visited Hood after getting out. I loved what 1SG Boynton said re: inhospitable etc. Have met guys that have been all over & to me, the theme seems to be: "pine trees (or whatever"s native), sand, and mud". At least in Europe you'll experience different (great) food, beverages, and sights. We think things are "old" here that are 200 years old, over there that's pretty new....
