You are authorized to wear the award(s) while a member of the unit. If you were a member of the unit during the actual award, then the award becomes part of your permanent authorization and you would have received the orders at the time of award. Many years ago, I discovered that my ship had received two medals, one for Viet Nam and one for South Korea, while I served aboard her. I had to write to the Navy Department to claim what was rightfully mine, and have my DD-214 updated/amended. Then I could wear them legally.
