Where did you get your civilian education degree?

Just curious because there has been some discussions about civilian education on RallyPoint. I haven't seen any studies showing where a majority of military personnel earn their degrees.

I can personally give one vote each to Broome Community College (Business Management), University of Arizona (Political Science), and Webster University (Human Resources Management). In December 2014 I can give one more vote for the University of Colorado - Boulder (Interdisciplinary Telecommunications).

Working towards my Associates degree from Excelsior College. They are very military friendly and have some great classes geared towards military members and their transition to civilian life. I plan on working my Bachelors degree through them too.

I got my Bachelors in Information Technology at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA (which is soon to absorbed by Kennesaw State University, grumble grumble..) and my MBA in Finance online through Grand Canyon University. 100% online classes were tough. It was convenient when I moved because I didn't have to stop classes or transfer schools, but I don't recommend online classes unless you have the discipline to teach yourself and get the job done.

Sir, I earned a BA in History at Virginia Military Institute. Graduated in 1983. At the time I was upset that I had missed being able to be commissioned by a very slim margin, but later I was very very happy. I compared most of the officers I saw to the enlisted I saw and realized that a lot of the officers were not worth a tinker's damn. One that was in the unit I deployed with to ODS, our S2, could not follow simple OPSEC while in Garrison. Plus he was sleeping with 90% of the female lower enlisted that resided in barracks before and during ODS. The Colonel refused to stop him. In fact threatened to punish me if I said anything about it. I would give the S2's name but will not due to the fact that a few years ago he killed himself. We shard a common friend, one of his girlfriends that I helped out for awhile. He was the only member of my company during ODS that I knew the status of. Cannot find any of the others. Since separation I have earned a BS in CJ/CSI from Kaplan University. I started to get one on IT, but decided to stop since I was unhappy with the school's program. I knew more than the professor about modern hardware. They were about 15 years behind. One thing I learned though at VMI and my time in is that an officer is almost worthless in combat without a good NCO.

After amassing 240 college credits, I finally got to a four year duty station and entered into an accelerated degree program through Concordia University. Associates in General Studies from American Military University. Seven classes left to complete my Bachelors in International Relations with a concentration in Asian Studies, also with American Military University. I am looking to change things up in both direction and university. Just began to entertain this, and I have some time so we shall see what happens. I am a late bloomer when it comes to education. I did not do this because of what I thought the degree could do for me. Although, there is no doubt it will help both while I continue my career in the Army and down the line from there. I did it so that I was not having to look at a hypocrite in the mirror every morning. I have harped on my Soldiers for years about taking advantage of the educational opportunities while they were in. I told my boys I would support whatever path they chose to follow in life as long as said path led through college. With my boys both following my advise, it was time for me to get off my butt and do the same.

My wife and I grew up in Denver, so Boulder was right down the street (okay a bit further than that). I remember sitting at my desk last year watching all the Colorado flood information as it came out. It looked like the University of Colorado - Boulder took a pretty good beating. My son attends Colorado State University in Fort Collins. They had a pretty sizable river flowing through town just north of the university. However, he was away at AIT during the this period. When we were back for Christmas I drove right past CU, and it was hard to imagine the flooding had ever taken place.

I started with an Associate of Science in Business/Real Estate at Sacramento City College. I transferred to University of Phoenix where I got my BS in Business Admin & Management. I advanced my career through an MS in Transportation Management at San Jose State University.

My advice is to ensure your credits are transferable and that the college or university you choose is fully accredited.

In 10 years in the Army I was the Bn FDC Chief and a Platoon Sgt. in 3 different artillery battalions, and was the Senior Operations NCO for the detachment that began the set up of the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin. As a civilian I have been a construction General Foreman, a nightclub/casino/restaurant manager, manager of a car auction, worked twenty years as a CNC Machinist, and worked 2 years on the Stealth Fighter project. I did all that on a HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA!

I accept that as a career NCO my educational background is kind of weird. Well, if Socrates could be a grunt, so could I. My BA was earned prior to enlisting, from the College of the Holy Cross in Philosophy and Theology. Enlisted for the GI Bill and to go to Germany, planning to drink beer, chase blondes and improve my German for Grad School. Did drink beer, married an American red head and liked the Army. Army paid for MA in Teaching when I was at Fort Huachuca in the 80s; Army also never let me teach again. After retiring, GI Bill paid for MA in Organizational Leadership and HR with Chapman at Fort Lewis and it was a very good program. Discovered I need to actually know how to do something in business, so I got a MBA in General Management from City University. Again, a good program.

I received my AAS in Emergency Medical Services from Barton County Community College while on active duty, a BA in Psychology from Syracuse University, and Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. I earned a Bachelors Degree in Communication (Broadcast Journalism),with a minor in Sociology from the University of South Alabama in 2008 prior to joining the Army. I just completed my Masters Degree in IT Management from Trident University International on 29 June. Not planning to pursue a doctoral degree. You see, my wife started her Masters Degree in Social Work at the same time I started mine and she will be done 29 August. Time to devote attention to the little ones instead of writing papers and doing projects. Did I mention that we moved twice, and both worked full-time?

I advise all service members to take advantage of Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill. Use it!! Education can help both in and out of the military. You will take off the uniform at some point...be prepared!

I will be graduating from Texas A&M University Central Texas next year. I will have a BA in Sociology and a minor in Psychology.

It has been a LONG 7 years. 2 babies, a deployment & PCS's. Finally complete. Trying to decide if I should go ahead and go for my masters or not.

As an elected Alumni Board member of the non-profit Excelsior College, I highly recommend it for any military person. Excelsior has again been named Best for Vets by Military.com. There are currently about 14,000 enrolled veterans. About half our Alumni board are veterans/disabled vets. Excelsior and it's predecessors have produced many distinguished graduates, including several general officers, many other officers, E9s, etc.
The college now offers Masters programs, and is world famous for nursing degrees.

Originally the Regents External College Degree Program, and later Regents College, etc..it was one of the few original fully accredited degrees programs in the "university without walls" concept during the early 1970s. While the military offered 2 and 4 year Equivalency ratings, most of us knew we needed that civilian credential. Regents/Excelsior offered that. So in addition to some 5,000 hrs of military resident and correspondence courses, I was completed an associates and bachelors degree there with minimum costs. Then a master's at Norwich.

The new Veteran's center has also helped 60,000 veterans achieve their goals!

PS--I went on to earn a Master's Degree from Norwich University (Vermont College) at a time when Excelsior did not yet offer a master's program. Norwich is also a very fine school, most people know it as a military college, but do not realize it is an original Ivy League!

I received an Associates Degree from St. Gregory's College (University today) in Shawnee, OK in 1989. Received a Baccalaureate from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, in 1994. The day I finished my degree requirements, I walked to the National Guard recruiter's office a few blocks away and signed up.

Associates - Cochise College
Bachelor's - American Military University
Currently doing post-Bachelor work at Hawaii Pacific University

My colleges were choosen based on availability during my military career and acceptance of TA. Cochise used my military credits and provided online classes. AMU accepted my Cochise/Military credits and provided online classes. HPU is the only University on-island that offers the necessary degree program for me to continue receiving TA.

I took the long and winding road to my Bachelor's degree.

Out of high school I went to the University of Southern California as a Business major. Due to family circumstances I left at the end of my second year.

I then spent three years at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, HI as basically a holding pattern while I figured things out.

I then attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa for three years as an Information & Computer Science major. Around the time that my wife got pregnant I realized that a) I didn't want to spend my life as a computer programmer and b) I needed a full time job because we needed medical insurance. That turned into a several year break from education.

Finally, during my first deployment I looked into finishing my Bachelor's degree since I had so many credits and nothing to show for it. I discovered Thomas Edison State College, where it turned out that I simply needed one more class (English) to get a diploma, and it could all be accomplished online. While on that deployment I finally had my Bachelor's degree with a major in Liberal Studies. Lots of people go to school for eight years. It's just that they're usually called Doctor.

I've thought about a Master's degree but I have no idea what field to pursue, and I'm deathly afraid that it will take me another eight years.

I went to a private university in St Paul, MN called Hamline University. While I wouldn't say they were unfriendly to veterans, it was definitely not a school filled with veterans. I got a BBA that I am very satisfied with. I will eventually get a Masters and/or some professional designations in the insurance industry. I think it's important to research the school veteran services before applying. Having competent financial aid representatives that are familiar with VA processes will go a long way. Going to a private institution caused me to need the Yellow Ribbon Program, which my school's financial aid office had tons of information about. I also believe finding a school that can take your SMART and provide some credit to help speed your way to a degree is invaluable.

VERY successful leaders in the Military and have been successful in the civilian world WITHOUT a degree!

I got my degree online at National American University in Applied Management in what is a degree completion program. This program (carried by several online colleges) gives the student as much credit as possible for past experience and schooling. About 2/3 of my degree was wiped out from CLEP tests and SMART transcripts.

I obtained my education from several sources, My asscociates from University of MD, Boise State and Community College of the AF. My BA I obtained from Excelsior College of Albany NY. Homeland Security Management with Criminal Justice emphasis. It was a long road, doing papers while deployed, with incoming mortars...raising children while working full time in the AF/Guard. But looking back all those exp. shaped the type of student I became. 3.7 grade avg.

I went to AMU for my B.A. in History and Trident University International for my M.B.A. in Human Resources Management. Both great military friendly schools. I also got a A.AS in Aviation Operation from the Air Force. My only suggestion would be to make sure any school you attend is 'Regionally Accredited'.

New England Institute of Technology in Rhode Island. I am working on Masters in Science of Occupational Therapy and should graduate in May 2017. They offer a bridge program for certified occupational therapy assistants that receive their certification through the military. The certification is the equivalent of an Associate's.
