I am the happiest when I am hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the fall when the colors are at their peak. Getting out and enjoying nature, away from everyone, and not having a worry in the world for a brief period of time helps rejuvenate my spirit.

At my age of 83 (84 in less than 30 days), I feel most centered and happy three times a day walking my two dogs at various places within 3 miles of my home. The older dog is a 13-year-old Shih Tzu who appeared as a frightened and starved little six-pound stray under our front porch 11 years ago. My wife at first thought she was a ground hog but felt sorry for her and brought her inside. Her personality caused us to name her Lindsay after the actress Lindsay Lohan. Lindsay the pet is very bossy of her adopted parents. She is now about 20 pounds, but the exercise keeps her very mobile. The younger dog is a mixed Shepherd/Labrador. Our son found him at a Stray Rescue facility when he was about 16 months old and raised him until about 8 months ago and 7 years old, when his work situation required us to bring him to our home for full time care. My son named him Hawkin after the scientist Stephen Hawkin. My son had met Mr. Hawkin several times over the years and was appreciative of his contributions to science. Hawkin our adopted stray dog has a very strange habit. When we have finished our walks, he will very quickly and aggressively head towards our car, tautly pulling on his chain, as if he were afraid of being left behind. We believe this may have occurred when he became a stray years ago. The walks we take keep me in better shape, gives the wife a break from their constant care, allows the pets to bark and express themselves and get some exercise. My wife has read this, and I now add that I misspoke above slightly. My wife is the love of my life and has kept me centered and happy through first raising our 62-year-old son, upwards of 25 pet dogs and cats over the years and did it all by herself during my 12 years plus of overseas isolated and unaccompanied Military separations.

Most centered and happy? This is a question that I get a lot of backlash over.

My answer is simple: on two wheels, at high speed, side by side with my Brothers.

People hear that, and immediately jump back at me with nonsense like "you don't love your kids?" Or "I knew a guy who knew a guy, who was my third cousin seven times removed, who's best friend's brother's roommate died on a motorcycle."

Cool story. I'm sorry for the loss of another rider, but as heartless as it may sound: I don't care. I didn't know them. Their death carries no impact for me. My joy is found on the road with nothing but two tires and a rumbling V-twin between me and the pavement that's rolling under me so fast that it seems no more than a blurry, faded black line.

They say trust is built 3 feet apart, at 90mph. I'm inclined to agree. But it's far more than the trust. It's the Brotherhood. The belonging. The mentality that we few (we happy few) have banded together over a common love, and grown to a level of respect, trust and love for one another that we would happily lay our life down for one another without a second's hesitation. That love of a Brother hugging your neck, and knowing that there is nothing that the two of you wouldn't do for each other.

And on the side of the admittedly dangerous way of life that is motorcycles; if you've never experienced that gut-wrenching, heart-racing, world-stopping thrill of absolute freedom, rolling down the road at speed with nothing to save you from the unforgiving pavement but your own wit and skill, and nothing to stop you but a gas tank and your own physicality, then I'm afraid you simply have not truly lived. There is no greater joy and freedom than in knowing that on a whim, you could just fall off the map and get lost in the beauty and splendor of our incredible countryside and disappear. Away from the bustle, away from the crowds, away from the stress. Just you and the road, the rumble of the pipes and the howl of the wind, and the choice of growth or death literally sitting in your wrists.

Where do I feel most centered and happy? In that perilous place that so few will go, and most will never understand.

I am happiest in music stores.
Not just any stores but massive warehouse type stores with vintage synthesizers and sound equipment from years passed .
They normally are not busy places however the few people that are usually there share the same interest as you and easily chat for awhile .
There’s actually only one store in NJ that provides that experience for me so usually a once every couple years thing .

I honestly don’t feel those things anymore. I get through my days on adrenaline and sheer will. PTSD is a bear and I do my best but this condition injures us severely. The closest I get to peace is serving the needy, the weak, and the poor in my community. Each is a human person. They deserve it.

Honestly I don't know no place seems to have any belonging. Doesn't matter where I go or who I don't or do talk with. Everywhere seems trust want to kick me out as if I'm not good enough for the world. I have marched from east to west, north and south. Everyplace doesn't feel as if I'm wanted or even belong. I can keep to myself or try to mingle with people but still in the end I'm cast out. I feel like I'm a creature in my own country and even the lowest of animals are more wanted around then I am. So I have had no center no zen for too long. Now I give no one an option to shun me away. I am self exiled and that's how it is for me in this life.

I am the happiest when I'm alone in my little would shop making things. That's really the only time my head is clear and focused. The rest of my day is just muddled with agevation, stress and frustration. But working on something like woods, resins and metal gives me a sense of normalcy that's hard to find elsewhere.

I feel most centered and joyful which is better than happy at my Home Churches Bible Studies and Worship services. I have a good news (for The Good News = Gospel.) I tried to commit suicide about a year ago and was taken by ambulance to the Raymond G. Murphy VA Hospital here in Albuquerque, NM. I had a false positive test for COVID-19 and was admitted to an isolation ward. While there, a VA Chaplain visited me via phone through protective glass. He asked if there was anything that he could do for me. I asked if he could get me a Bible to read. The next day he brought two large-print Bibles to my room, one for me and another for one of the nurses. I read almost every hour a chapter at a time. I had not been reading anything for over 2 years. So, like Joseph, whose brothers sold him as a slave, Joseph became the Pharaoh's steward for all of Egypt. When his brothers came for food, he was able to provide them all they needed. So what his brothers meant for harm, YHWH used to benefit Joseph's family.

Answering this question truthfully leaves me with this: The real truth is nothing good: I'm not happy and I'm not content and I am so very, very far from those two things. The future isn't looking to good either as there isn't much to look forward to.

- So here's why -
I'm a Disabled Veteran AND later became a Disabled Police Officer after 10 long years of rehab from my military injury. Now... I'm not content or happy because I live on a very limited and fixed income living month to month when I receive my disability pay. I can't work overtime to save for a vacation, I can't make some court time to help pay for home repairs or something a little extra for me because the bills need paid first, foremost and always leaving nothing left every single month. I stress everyday as I watch my home fall into disrepair as I can not afford the materials and can no longer do the work. I don't sleep very well because of extreme pain and struggle throughout each day in pain everywhere in my body. I also stress non stop worrying that something big goes wrong and how I will not be able to pay for it. If I have an added or unexpected expense of $100 for example, it sets me in the proverbial "rob Peter to pay Paul" mode which always leaves me running behind on something somewhere to someone for something!

I don't live beyond my means. I'm not an alcoholic or drug addict and I don't have a gambling problem. The problem I have is I'm a physical wreck of a person from injuries from serving my country in the US Army and serving my local communities as a Police Officer. I was injured in the line of duty during both careers and which was known the propensity for life threatening or debilitating injuries. I willingly accepted those risks and paid the price for doing so.

Now, at the ripe old age of 51, my body is literally falling apart and I suffer in pain all day and night from those injuries and resulting surgeries which didn't help. To add insult to injury, I suffer from Psoriatic Arthritis SEVERELY courtesy of Uncle Sam and the "mystery shots" for Desert Shield/Storm; you know, the modern day Vietnam that everyone has forgotten about thanks to 9/11. Most help out there is for "Post 9/11" Veterans. In fact, when I first contacted the Wounded Warrior Project many years ago and was asked what era I was from and said Desert Shield/Storm the guy on the other end of the phone said he had never heard of it and that they (WWP) only "serve post 9/11 Veterans".

So... I have nothing to look forward to but pain, agony, no money and none of life's little luxuries. I can't fix up my house but I sure can sit around and watch it deteriorate! I have never been on a vacation and never will. Hell, I can't even say "at least I have my health!". My life is over for the most part and all that is left for me is to sit and wait for the remaining pain filled nightmare to end which is absolutely pathetic.

All of what I have written is sad and pathetic but all true. Anyone that wants to verify what I have said, just let me know because I have no problem sharing my horror story as I have no pride left as I have had to beg and beg to get help with no luck.

So that's the real answer to the question and as short as I can make it and still get the point across with all the pertinent details. And please know that I didn't write this for attention or for anyone to feel sorry for me (I have done that enough on the inside and keep it hidden pretty well) and I'm absolutely not nor have I ever been suicidal. Where do I feel the most centered and happy? This has been a question that I have been asking myself a lot lately and it feels like a coincidence now. In reality I feel most centered and happy when I get into bed at the end of the day. That is my space to stretch, breathe , reflect and worship . I am always happy in the woods or on the water. I love to hike, hunt and fish every chance I get. I also enjoy homesteading. In the last few years however I discovered there is nothing like being on the ocean, I take every scenic tour or fishing trip within driving distance and in my budget. I am taking a sailing class in the spring and my long term goal is to buy my own sailboat some day and sail the world.

I feel the most comfortable at my home. I have been to so many different places and seen so many different historical places that I am completely satisfied at home. I can relax, dress the way that I want, pretty much do what I want and for the most part NOTHING is that important that I cannot wait. I live in the Olympic National Forest and have eleven plus deer that are regulars in my yard as i feed them a selenium corn feed to eradicate their Asian deer lice infestation that leds to hypothermia. For me, it is during events along with my Brothers and sisters of Rolling Thunder Chapter 5 Kentucky. We are a501c3 charity organization focused on bringing awareness to the POW*MIA issues, educating the public about the over 82,000 MIAs still unaccounted for and assisting veterans in need.

Not only was Iin the military, I grew up in the military (from birth). I learned from an early age about being there for our brothers and sisters in uniform as well as their families; their first line of support. I have since been blessed to be able to carry on that tradition of helping our veterans and the families of the missing.

For too long, the government and the public have forgotten those lost while serving this country. Rolling Thunder, which is a national organization, keeps the names of the lost alive, reminds the families that we will never forget their loved one and teaches the public who is still unaccounted for. When we are able to escort the remains of one of newly identified and accounted for back home to their loved ones, there is no better feeling than to see the sense of relief on the faces of families and friends of that hero. That is when I know I am in the right place, doing the right thing, for all of the right reasons. That, makes me happy.

Serving those that are hungry and thirsty. My wife and I manage a food pantry that serves residents of three communities. Recent times have had people come to us stating they have no food and we serve them with a 12 other volunteers. With increase in fuel oil, electricity and other basic needs, some do not have enough money left to buy food. We are glad to help.

I am happy and at peace when I am near a body of water. The beach, a lake, a pond, a river, a waterfall, a water fountain, a bathtub full of bubbles, a pool, a shower……. There are 3 places I feel most centered. 1. At my church, whether it be watching service via live stream, or attending in person. 2. Coaching kids alongside my old high school track coach. I met my beloved wife in the US Army and we were 'on the road' in the service of the US Republic for most of our adult lives together. We never thought we would be able to afford a home but by the Grace of God and a VA loan we were finally able to buy a place of our own in North Carolina. These days I am happiest on the golf course. I am surrounded by nature. Our tree lined course is beautiful year-round. The deer and the wild turkeys wander among us. My friends and I are at an age where we can accept the vagaries of the game and even a "bad day" is a good day. Politics and social problems are non-existent while we are on the course. And the 19th hole provides additional opportunity to play "would of, could of, should of, while enjoying the camaraderie of our like-minded friends.

I feel most centered and happy near a body of water. Doesn't have to be the ocean but that is, of course, the best! I'm a fiery Leo, so water naturally calms me down and forces me to relax. After taking a few deep breaths, I am completely centered and at ease. Unfortunately, I have not made it to the beach in 3 years, which is probably why I have felt so frazzled lately! :( I've been close - Charleston twice in the last 2 years - and have driven over several nice rivers and lakes, but the ocean has eluded me. I am determined to get there next year!! #Woosah

Having been single all my life, and now in older age, I find it very difficult to find my center and happiness.

I am a homebody, but do like to get out with friends, but that hasn't happened in over two years, so it will be nice to get out with friends. That will help me to be happy.

Also having my very smart, rescued Shih Tzu dog, comforts me when I'm down is very nice.

Hello as a older Veteran female with numerous body ailment. This may sound weird, I feel my most happiest is that I have awaken to another beautiful day and thanking God I am still here on this earth. I have a bad back and knees, so I am not able to move that well. Before I take my shower, in my small bathroom, I try to stretch my legs & arm lifts a few times every other day. When I am able to do so, it makes me smile and I can begin my day with a positive attitude. All thanks go to my GOD!

I not only feel, but know I am most centered and happy when I am studying and sharing the Word of God. Be it in the Bible Studies I have opportunity to lead, walking and shopping in stores and restaurants, Worshipping in church or just having conversations while visiting or helping in the community.
Jesus is the center of my life and the Provider of all my joy. I repurposed from Project Administrator with a large health insurance company to driving school bus and sharing the Gospel at Immanuel Mission in Teec Nos Pos, AZ in 2018. I thought project administrator was my most favoritist job until coming here, meeting and working with my Navajo friends and family.
I've been able to watch the babies and other children grow and learn at Immanuel Mission School.
It don't get much better than this.

When I'm home alone, kids are at school, dog is fed and quiet, husband is busy working on his latest project in his work shed, and I've got my music cranked up. I even manage to dance thru the chronic pain sometimes ❤️❤️❤️❤️ My fellow veterans and patriots y'all should check out Tom Macdonald on YouTube. Totally independent musician, my oldest son (25 years old) got me listening to right around the time Trump was elected, and our future looked like it could mirror an episode of Handmaid's tale at any moment. He only speaks the truth and won't shut up! He struggles with depression and anxiety, as do many of us. I can't get enough!

I am happiest when I'm out in nature whether on a walk on a trail, a hike in the mountains in Colorado, or walking or relaxing on the beach in Puerto Rico where we have a 2nd home. Puerto Rico is my haven because when I'm there I do not experience or expose myself to life's routine stresses. I make it a point to avoid the news; limit social media; and avoid controversial subjects like politics. When I'm not touring the island I relax by the beach or at my Casita. Peace is my mantra.

I feel like I am "HOME" in the woods preferably a mile or more away the nearest "civilization" and sitting in front of a crackling campfire. I have been an avid outdoorsman since I was old enough to walk with my father on a mountain trail where I was born, he taught me the pleasure and calming effect that being with Nature has on the soul. He also taught me the bounty which lies untapped within the forest fauna and flora. I have to this day been more at home, more relaxed, and as calm as one man can ever hope to be camped by a flowing river or within the protection of a forest canopy to shelter me, provide food for me, and allow me to marvel at the wonderous beauty of nature. Now, nearing my 80th birthday, I would give all that I own to once again journey out into the unbounded environment of some solitary woodland "playground" where I could find the "real me" again, if only for a few short days and nights of camping and living in harmony with Nature once more.

My newest adventure in life is my diagnosis of cancer in my salivary gland on the left side of my face.
Since October of 2021 I've been in 'recovery'. I'm most happy and comfortable in my home. I can take all of information and sift through it all to help to apply the suggestions and information to make it mine. I have learned so much about the VA even more so involved in my recovery.
My friends and family help me from all over to help assist me in things I can't do for myself, even now!
And that has been a new experience with me relying on others and not take it personally that I can't do certain things on my own.
So, my home is where I try to make sense of a lot of things since October of last year. It's my headquarters for exercise, for learning how to eat again and to then make meals, for gathering my friends together for fellowship and fun, and going through all the pamphlets and handouts and links for assistance in understanding my cancer and my recovery.

I feel that I am most centered when doing volunteer events for other Vets and military spouses with one of community’s organization.

For me it is working in the disabilities ministry at my church. The group meets on Thursday nights and the age is around 14 years old and up. Most people will say it’s to difficult to work with people who are disabled, but I find it very rewarding. Working with people who are autistic or on the spectrum really requires you to be a good listener. You will not find a greater group of people to work with because they a genuine. The empathy they show to anothers is amazing. It takes a little time for them to accept you. But when they do you are family.

I feel most centered and happy when I am SCUBA diving. It is amazing to see what is under the water in a way that many people have never seen. The colors, the corals, the way the water feels like it is giving you a big wet hug. But just as it is beautiful and thrilling, at the same time you have to constantly be "in the moment" and not forget your breathing, checking your gauges, checking your buddy, etc. I literally feel butterflies in my stomach every time I drop into the water. And that is the place that I feel whole, full of joy and amazement and like the luckiest girl in the world.

Where I feel most centered and happy is being able to continue starting my Day with a positive message that I began using over 10+ years ago, including this current present day!?.
Even as I reflect back to the first Day that this message was introduced into my life by one of My People, and one of my Great friends that I have known for quite a few years throughout my Lifetime!?.
Even to this current day we still speak to each other and spend time together occasionally, and still maintain a strong friendship as we continue moving forward!?.
I will always be forever blessed and absolutely grateful, but there are not enough great words to describe how much I am genuinely and sincerely thankful for All People for being so My Amazing and Incredible, including this Great Friend for giving myself this unbelievable gift, which I know and believe without a doubt, saved My Life that very first Day, 10+ years ago, and exactly the gift I needed to help fix myself and decide to make the changes to improve and become a much better example of myself!?.
Being a positive role model/leader with a positive and open honest mindset, leading by example and learning to embrace the changes!?.
The message my great friend learned from a motivational speaker at work seminar and later explained the concept of the message to myself and my roommates!?.
The whole concept is to wake up and begin by saying something positive First, which generally is supposed to help the rest of your be more positive!?.
The message that I my friend passed along to myself and I have been using for 10+ years is, It's a Great Day. -original speaker's message-
Throughout the course of accepting this message and adapting things that I started to incorporate and added to the original message over the 10+ years, after adding simple little changes to the original message, I was able to create my very own personal quote, patent pending** ("It's A Great DAY!?.")**
Now what originally started as something I was doing to help better myself turned into something even more than I would ever imagined!?. My people started to take notice of my personal change, and other's wanted to help my journey and story, which some of my people suggested I should use to help others and also pitch my story to other outlets, and with the help of my people and all the things I have been able to add to help inspire or motivate people through my life, all the way from the beginning of my bringing up leading into adapting the original message into my life up until the present day, Right Now!?. Live for Today!?.
Tomorrow is not Guaranteed!?.
Begin with positive message or create your own personal message!?.

I feel very relaxed every time I get on base at the Patuxent Naval Air Station. This was my first duty station where my wife and I shared happiness and sorrow. The base offers water front that has a relaxing effect. Also, I have been stationed in several of the squadrons there and worked at some of the Navair program offices. There is a aircraft on display on base that I used to work on and have flown many times. I feel like this is my home away from home. Sometimes I go there just to relax and recharge. It has a magical effect when I watch airplanes taking off or landing. Both the wife and I will always cherish the memories at the base. It is part of our lives.

When foster kittens find their forever homes. Bitter sweet; You get so attached, especially when bottle feeding from a tiny kitten to adoption ready. Also when transporting shelter fur babies to a rescue organization that can provide for their special medical needs, and the ones once rehabilitated, can get them fostered/adopted out.
Our animal shelters are overwhelmed, understaffed, under funded, not always equipped to handle every sick or injured intake, and can always use the freed up space (especially for sick, very young, or special need cases).

I feel at my most centered and happy anytime I'm in the company of my daughter. She has a very soothing affect on me everytime. I'm always my "best me" around her.
She has aspergers and has a Masters degree in Psychology and is considering going for a Doctorate. She is amazing and I'm so proud of her.

Definitely Sequoia National Park, just being around those giant, prehistoric redwood trees is so grounding and humbling. There's also so much to explore around there, nothing like seeing new species for the first time to bring a sense of happiness and wonder.

I am the most centered and happy when I'm fishing and out on the water. It's peaceful, no city sounds, all the focus is on nature and catching a fish. Everything else falls away. It's the best.

After moving to Minnesota when I was in college, and then visiting back throughout my time in the Navy has led me to feel happy and centered here, in MN, unlike any other place I've lived.
Can't explain but it's where my family is from; perhaps it's in the blood. I'm in the process of trying to move back so that I can feel it always.
