A long time ago, I went to a CPA for advice on a tax issue, and he said that he agreed with my approach. Over the years, I had good luck calling the IRS with tax questions. Now they just answers questions on Sch D and the 1040 form. I order the publications that I need and will carefully read these publications. I will read sections over three or four times until I understand what I need to do. I will also check the internet for similar situations as mine, to see if I can find an answer. Three days ago, I received the publications and forms that I had ordered the first part of January. Some of the forms I need are not yet available. So far, I have been able to do my own taxes, with the main problem being the IRS not having the forms and publications out in a timely manner. Then to a mix of professionals, the last charged me $400 (remember, this was years ago). When I compared the results with a S/W program, they were nearly the same. The program was about $10. Recommend a do it yourself program, similar to what the professionals use, but much cheaper. And for a variety of reasons, my tax returns are somewhat complicated.
