I will say one of the most surprising meals I had was during was our Thanksgiving and Christmas meal during Desert Storm, the TCN's really went all out for that. The worst? A crusty old Chief Mess Specialist leading a bunch of civilians. Needless to say I was spoiled once I got to my first ship and tasted real Navy chow. The dining facility was in a 5-Star Hotel that had been taken over as a barracks and the dining room staff ran the mess. Lobsters, steak, etc. were plentiful...<br /><br />The worst was during Desert Storm... One of my attached National Guard companies had the absolute worst food I had ever eaten in my life. I ate there a couple of times and, after being unable to determine what the "mystery meat" was and being unable to see any improvement, I reassigned a few of the cooks from other active and RC units to assist the mess sergeant of that unit (Who was an attorney in "real life" and really did not have a clue. Seems that during drills, they had always eaten MREs or been a part of a consolidated dining facility and had never had to go it alone, as was the case in Desert Storm).
