I recently arrived to JBLM a week ago and am almost done in-processing.
I've always wanted to live off post but I've heard the I-5 has terrible traffic. A friend who's stationed here said that although the BAH is pretty high, he has only been able to save about $100 from what he pays for a place he owns, so I think I might run into a similar problem,
Anyways, I've decided on-post might be good for now, just for now until I can save up for a car and a better place. Any recommendations for a 13M who's living on-post? Possibly close to 5-3 FA?

Are you married? If you are single, you will not be able to live off post at JBLM without the exception to policy. Which you will not get since they have plenty of barracks space there. I left JBLM in 2015 as an IG and I'm sure that policy has not changed.

For a young couple new to the Army, I would definitely recommend that you stay on post. Living off post regardless of the BAH can be very eye opening for a young couple and living on post will help your wife get used to the military life. Don't get caught in that trap of knowing you can pocket a few dollars by living in a place that is way below your BAH. That just means its a shithole. I wish you luck, JBLM is a great assignment.

BAH rates are different depending on rank and marital/dependency status.

Most installations won’t allow any single Soldier below E-6 to live offpost unless they get an Exception to Policy Letter from their Commander. Check with your unit to see what that policy is.
