I was a reserve O-6 getting ready to assume Command on 9/14 (Friday). My wife called me on my way into my Navy CIV job telling me to turn on the news. I wound up doing an email CoC on Wednesday and was on the first Alaska Airline flight out of SEATAC on Friday. From there it was a whirlwind. You know you're traveling a lot when you hit premium mileage status on two airlines... in March.

Senior year of high school. I was passing through the last intersection before I parked at the school when the DJ on the radio say that a plane had run in to the World Trade Center. From the sound of his voice, he wasn't sure exactly what he was reading, either.

SFC Stephen King I was at work in Houston. We had TV monitors mounted on the walls throughout the building that were on during shuttle launches and landings. They were on for 9/11, and we watched the horrendous events with disbelief.

SFC Stephen King I had just gotten out of the Air Force the year before. I was sitting in my Illustration class in college (yes, I was an Art Major). I was the only one listening to the radio. When it was first reported I exclaimed, "Oh my God! Something bad is going on in NYC." By the time everyone had stopped, the second plane had hit. That's when I let them know this wasn't an accident. We pulled a TV into the room and just watched.

where were you when the world stopped turning?
I was in Concord NC at school working on my Associate's Degree. someone said something about an aircraft crash, so I went to my truck and listened to the radio. classes were, of course, cancelled. so I went home and tried to find out if my employer (Federal Reserve Bank Security in Charlotte NC). could not get through to them, so I went in anyhow. our head of security, even with a threat against our branch, was not recalling anyone. but we had the sheriff's department posted at our entrances.

I remember hearing how quiet, eerily so, it was.
