WHAT MADE IT GOOD/BAD ABOUT YOUR DUTY STATION OR DEPLOYMENT ?

Last year, Camp Casey South Korea. It was my first duty station and I was excited about going to a new country and experienceing a differen culture. There were a lot of sights to see and a lot of places to shop, gifts were pretty cheap. What made it bad was that it's a fast pace duty assignment. As soon as you had one person trained to do something, they'd be PCSing to somewhere else and then you'd have to retrain another person to do their job. All in all, it was a good experience and I met some truly wonderful people.

In 1984-85 I was stationed at Clark AFB, Philippines. I was a Crew Chief for F4 Phantoms. It was my first time to be in a foreign country and I was excited about the new experiences that were ahead of me. The time I spent on and off base will always be in a special part of my memory.

Spent 6 years at hood. 12 months of that in Mosul, and a month at JRTC in Ft Polk. I ETS'd after that. Lost two dear friends in Mosul in 2011z RIP Sgt Bartley and SGT Lamar.

Ft. Bragg, top notch soldiers and Great area for outdoor activities. The bad not much I can remember.
Ft. Carson- Great location an hour and a half away from Denver. A lot to do. The bad soldiers are not as motivated compared to Fort Bragg.

Most postings are what you make of them. My assignment to Alaska was a prime example of this. I was assigned to Elmendorf AFB, AK. It is located adjacent to Anchorage and Ft Richardson. My family and I went there with a positive attitude and determination to enjoy all that Alaska had to offer. Great scenery, winter sports, summer fishing, camping, hiking, and good schools for the kids. Turned out that on-base housing was very good. The flying mission was perhaps the best C-130 job at the time (mid-1980s).

Sadly, we saw some people who hated every minute of their assignment to Alaska. They couldn't or wouldn't adopt the "just do it" attitude necessary to enjoy all the area has to offer. They hibernated during the winter (October through May) and then complained because the summers were too hot, too short, too light, too buggy. Everything was too expensive, too difficult, too far away, and they missed their families in the Lower 48 too much. They suffered through their 3-year assignment to one of the most beautiful locations on Earth and missed every opportunity to be happy.

The only deployments I didn't like were UN missions simply because when you came under fire like we did in several deployments we had to jump thru hoops to get the green light to defend ourselves...which usually happened after the combatants left our AO.
Not to mentioned most UN mission have you deploy full battle rattle...but NO ammo.
Back in the day we used to call UN missions "Useless Negotiations" missions! Thank God NATO missions weren't like that...

Germany, fort bragg, fort hood, fort bliss. Of all of them germany was by far my favorite. The traveling opportunities and the culture was always interesting. The place I liked the least was fort bliss. It was just too far away from our family and that became an issue after I got married and had a family. I also learned from Bliss and deployment that I am not a fan of the desert and dirt and dust. I really got to really miss trees, grass and rain to. My unit wasn't bad though.
