My take MLK was both courageous and a deeply spiritual man
and was harassed by the FBI. If you watch the X-Files and
from time to time Stargate SG-1. Both talked about the
geopolitical cause and effect, which reveals both bigotry
and racism on the part of the government.

Martin Luther King Jr, was a great man and his cause
championed by us all. In Greensboro, they have a
place where black Americans sat at a counter, were
assaulted and thrown. Much like the harassment
encountered by Bob Gibson and other people of color,
we owe a debt of gratitude to the civil rights crowd.

I hesitate to attribute much to Jackson and Sharpton
but a corollary effect was bringing attention the cops
versus criminals and the brutality.

We lived in Wichita Falls and Burkburnett. I remember
hearing the news and MLKs death mattered more
than the Kennedys, only because it humanized blacks.

What is your take and where did you grow up? Did his
death impact you and how so?

SSgt (Join to see), Larry, It was the first year after I got home from Vietnam. I was 23. I was and still am interested in the movement by King. He was a great visionary and so close to God he predicted his own death and what he wanted his followers to do after his death. I was just getting used to Kennedy's assassination, which I was watching on tv, and then a cowardly bigot kills King. I remembered his famous speech and thought, he is a great man and not afraid of anything or anyone. He made a difference which should be everyone's bucket list.

In 1968 I was returning from Vietnam and our plane had landed in Ankorage, Alaska for a fuel stop. A tragic day in American history. His legacy lives.

Reverend King did accomplish what he set out to do. That was for the white man to see Negros aren't any different than white people. They were abused for over a hundred years. Beaten, burned to death, raped, sold, tortured. It was against the white man's law to be caught reading or having a bible, and of course there are the cowards who hanged them. Sometimes a whole family was hanged, and left hanging for other Negros to see. I've read several biographies by authors who experienced the white man's cruelty. Some of those things are hard for me to understand how mean and cruel a person could be to do this to another person. Reverend King did what he set out to do, but he paid a high price. Now, I see the times are changing back to discrimination against the blacks, and the blacks are killing each other at such a high rate it's hard to keep up with. Most all of his Dream is going up in smoke. My how the times are a changing, again.
My youngest grandaughter is black. I've seen the looks from white people, and black people, when we go somewhere together. She's an innocent, beautiful, smart little girl and I am so happy she's in my life. Maybe the times will change again by the time she goes to school, and there will be acceptance for all colors and nationalities. One can only hope and pray. Maybe I'll see that in my lifetime.

SSgt (Join to see). Don't forget Jackie Robinson. He was up against a white mans brick wall, but he did his job and busted through the that wall. I always considered him a pioneer in baseball.

MAJ David Vermillion - Nice to see around sir! And I agree with that. Lived in a mixed community, however they were across the road and a fence at the neighbor's back yard. We had no idea of race or the implications but we were happy to have friends.

I was at home outside Philadelphia SSgt (Join to see) in 1968. That was a sad year for assassinations of both Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.
I was about 12 years old enough and beginning to be aware of current events. I already had a keen interest in history especially military history buy that time.

LTC Stephen F. I am also reading up on things like the Vietnam War and the times of the 60s and 70s. One great movie about this is the movies (The 60s), I touched on PTSD, shell shock and both white and black families who similar rights and fought for those rights,

Wow, a good time ago then. I remember the Memphis Motel and the shock over this terrible tragedy. LTC Stephen C. Not sure what my dad thought of him but my dad looked like Archie Bunker and did not like Tom Jones because they were. ******.
My brothers and sisters took him to task and no one told what he felt was wrong, because we are hostages in time.
