But there are some in Germany that are a part of 173d. Most other units don&#39;t have Airborne slots. Loved it. At the rate that force structure has left Germany, I would take whatever you can to get assigned there. The only way will be a 9 month deployment before too long, and then it will be to Eastern Europe, not Germany.<br /><br />SOC has a command element, I believe in Stuttgart or Wiesbaden. Europe is heavy land, tanks and brads, along with theater enablers. Yes 173d is there, mostly in Italy, but some in Graf. You might, I say might, want to consider assignment as other than an airborne unit. <br /><br />Germany is a tremendous opportunity. You can also easily travel through out Europe. I would jump on the opportunity if that is what has been offered. Or Someone else will... I do know many who had the chance to cross train with other NATO airborne troops, so if you get over here, there are endless possibilities. And being a cook can also be another way to access other country&#39;s wings. Hope it works well for you. Last I heard SF was in Stuttgart. Honestly, I don&#39;t prefer my the nuances of my job in an OCONUS environment... its hard enough to follow US laws, let alone host nation laws. I&#39;m just here for the TRAVEL. Brother, if you can budget and plan, you can see this entire continent. That has been the single most enjoyable part about being stationed in Germany. Flying RyanAir will pucker your butthole, but I&#39;ll endure shaky landings and crappy seats for $30 plane tickets any day. <br /> <br />And in case anyone cares, the picture above is of Rothenberg, less tan an hour from where I am. I&#39;ve been there about 10 times. Great Christmas markets and other small German town kind of stuff. Its actually one of Germany&#39;s last remaining walled cities. If your interested in staying in Germany and staying on status, I still have some friends there that may be able to help (PM me and let me know). But your also based in Stuttgart (correct?). You should have a couple of my old Soldiers there that can direct you (and answer any questions as well). Your heading to Stuttgart? <br /><br />Stuttgart is also on airborne status as well (if you can get this assignment). <br /><br />Germany is nice, Stuttgart is a little boring (in my opinion) BUT your only a short trip from nearly everything. <br /><br />173D isn&#39;t easy duty, nearly all of Europe (and a considerable amount of CONUS units) support the Balken states pretty formabidly (so prep yourself). <br /><br />But Europe is awesome. If you have the chance, come. Good or bad it will be an experience most never get. I don&#39;t remember seeing many Airborne but we did have a lot of Intel groups. Africom is out of Stuttgart, DIA, DISA, some NATO, You may want to look at coming down to ground level. Reading your other response we all have goals but make sure you are setting your self up for post Military success. Not much call for jumping out of Planes and humping dirt in the civi world. It&#39;s an Airborne/Joint Service unit. You can stay on airborne status provided there is an open slot, as not all personnel are Airborne here. With that being said it&#39;s a great unit, and definitely worth it to gain some unique experience!
