Where you stationed in Germany? What unit? Can I stay on Airborne status there? Lastly did you enjoy your experience?

Your best bet is in Italy (173d) with the Sky Soldiers. But there are some in Germany that are a part of 173d. Most other units don't have Airborne slots.

I was assigned to 1/52 Infantry from 1981 to 1984 in Bamberg, Germany SSG Private RallyPoint Member.
Back then CPT now GEN David Rodriguez and COL later GEN Wayne Downing was the brigade commander.
Bamberg was my most challenging and best assignment

Heidelberg 2009-2012, Allied Force Command Heidelberg (NATO), both now closed. Loved it. At the rate that force structure has left Germany, I would take whatever you can to get assigned there. The only way will be a 9 month deployment before too long, and then it will be to Eastern Europe, not Germany.

SOC has a command element, I believe in Stuttgart or Wiesbaden. Europe is heavy land, tanks and brads, along with theater enablers. Yes 173d is there, mostly in Italy, but some in Graf. You might, I say might, want to consider assignment as other than an airborne unit.

Germany is a tremendous opportunity. You can also easily travel through out Europe. I would jump on the opportunity if that is what has been offered. Or Someone else will... Opportunities are fleeting

I was stationed in The Nederlands. We drove into Germany often. It was a great place to live and travel around. Loved it. That picture looks very familiar, I'm sure I've been there.

I was Army Reserve in Europe, but I know the only one(AB) is 173d as others stated. I do know many who had the chance to cross train with other NATO airborne troops, so if you get over here, there are endless possibilities. And being a cook can also be another way to access other country's wings. Hope it works well for you. Last I heard SF was in Stuttgart.

SSG Private RallyPoint Member I'm currently stationed in Ansbach, Germany and I fall under the Garrison. Honestly, I don't prefer my the nuances of my job in an OCONUS environment... its hard enough to follow US laws, let alone host nation laws. I'm just here for the TRAVEL. Brother, if you can budget and plan, you can see this entire continent. That has been the single most enjoyable part about being stationed in Germany. Flying RyanAir will pucker your butthole, but I'll endure shaky landings and crappy seats for $30 plane tickets any day.

And in case anyone cares, the picture above is of Rothenberg, less tan an hour from where I am. I've been there about 10 times. Great Christmas markets and other small German town kind of stuff. Its actually one of Germany's last remaining walled cities.

173d is based in Italy but there are two Battalions in Germany (1-91 and 4-319). If your interested in staying in Germany and staying on status, I still have some friends there that may be able to help (PM me and let me know). But your also based in Stuttgart (correct?). You should have a couple of my old Soldiers there that can direct you (and answer any questions as well).

Stuttgart is also on airborne status as well (if you can get this assignment).

Germany is nice, Stuttgart is a little boring (in my opinion) BUT your only a short trip from nearly everything.

173D isn't easy duty, nearly all of Europe (and a considerable amount of CONUS units) support the Balken states pretty formabidly (so prep yourself).

But Europe is awesome. If you have the chance, come. Good or bad it will be an experience most never get.

Navy here I was in Stuttgart and Loved it. I don't remember seeing many Airborne but we did have a lot of Intel groups. Africom is out of Stuttgart, DIA, DISA, some NATO, You may want to look at coming down to ground level. Reading your other response we all have goals but make sure you are setting your self up for post Military success. Not much call for jumping out of Planes and humping dirt in the civi world. Yes I know its fun lol! Just keep long term in the back of your mind, good luck hope you get a chance to see Germany.

Ayers Kaserne, Kirch-Gons Germany 92-95. Scout platoon 3-5 Cav. Great times. Traveled all over Europe. tried to get back many times throughout my career and never could. If I could have gone back to Germany I would probably still be in the Army. If you have the opportunity to go, TAKE IT.

173rd has the 4-319th AFAR and 1-91 CAV in Grafenwöhr. The rest of the brigade is in Italy.

Bad Nauhiem, Gelnhousen, Stuttgart (CLSU-N), Mannhiem (5/68 Armor) and Worms (TCLSC-E). First two as a dependent, last three as a soldier. Can't speak to airborne status, however I can say that this is an opportunity of a lifetime, get out and explore. I love Germany and enjoyed being stationed there immensely.

I was stationed in Ray Barracks, Friedberg Germany which is now closed. Nice small town with a train station 15 minute walk from quarters. Priceless!

It was a fantastic experience that ended up in Desert Storm in 1990_91.
Right after I left, they closed it!

I am currently stationed with SOCAFRICA here in Stuttgart. It's an Airborne/Joint Service unit. You can stay on airborne status provided there is an open slot, as not all personnel are Airborne here. With that being said it's a great unit, and definitely worth it to gain some unique experience!
