Which area of emphasis should I choose for my blog, enlisted vets transitioning to civilian or my experience joining the American Legion?

I agree with Joseph. More people would be served with a blog about translationing to the civilian world.

So what has been your experience with the Legion? I joined the VFW but found it to be a smokers bar run by the 1970-80s crowd. Not too good.

I used to do some volunteer work with both, often found American Legion to be more welcoming (just my opinion) to all vets from all branches. I have only been to one meeting. I didn't go back because they immediately wanted me to join color guard/ drill. If I am completely honest, I don't like/want the uniform either. I wore the Marine uniform proudly, no desire for this one. I would prefer a simple collar shirt with a baseball cap (realizing this will upset someone). I know they do incredible things for vets and community (more than most vet orgs), but something is missing the mark. Has to be more than walking in parades, pancake breakfast and bingo.

Sgt Matt Medhat - I agree there has to be more. I feel some of these VSOs have not figured out how to connect with younger vets while keeping their older vets interested. Went to 3 meeting and ate, listened and really did not hear a message much more than "hang out with us" which is fine, but I am not into that sort of thing in big doses. Had to wash all my clothing (smoke) and take a shower to get it out of my hair.
Think I will just try some volunteer stuff with the DAV. Help some folks with VA combat.
