"Army Strong" is the recruiting slogan that is used currently by the United States Army. The composer of the song used in the Army Strong television commercials is Mark Isham.[3]

2001 to 2006

"Army of One" was a relatively short-lived recruiting slogan. It replaced the popular "Be All You Can Be" and was replaced in 2006 by the new slogan "Army Strong".[4]The Army of One slogan was meant to mean as described Sun Tzu's Art of War in Chapter VI Weak Points and Strong, that you are only as strong as your weakest link,if the enlisted soldiers are not trained by the non commissioned officers,because the officer are not with troops and checkout what they need,a Army is very weak. The reason for the replacement is believed to be[by whom?] that the slogan "Army of One" is contrary to the idea of teamwork.[citation needed] It is unknown whether this slogan was taken directly from the poster for the 1976 Clint Eastwood film The Outlaw Josey Wales, which had "An Army of One" under a drawing of the Josey Wales character. The "One" in the slogan was an acronym, standing for Officers, Non-Commissioned, and Enlisted,[citation needed] the three types of Soldiers in the US Army.

1980 to 2001

Be All (That) You Can Be was the recruiting slogan of the United States Army for over twenty years.[5] This popular slogan was created by Earl Carter while at the advertising firm N. W. Ayer & Son. He was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Award for his efforts.[6] In his autobiography Soul of It All, Michael Bolton claims to have sung the jingle in the early 1980s.[7]

1971 to 1980

"Today's Army Wants to Join You" was a recruiting slogan from the 1971 Volunteer Army (Project VOLAR) campaign, which was introduced as the country prepared to transition to an all-volunteer military. When N. W. Ayer & Son, who were engaged by the US Army, believed they felt the army said "Today's Army is changing; we want to meet you half way", the firm came up with that slogan. General William Westmoreland asked "Do we have to ask it that way?" but agreed to the campaign. The slogan was replaced by "Join the People Who've Joined the Army" in 1973, which later evolved into "This is the Army."[8]

Slogan was written in 1971 by Ted Regan Jr., Executive Vice President and Executive Creative Director of N.W. Ayer, the Army's ad agency. Regan also wrote the follow up slogan, "Join the people who've joined the Army."

Circa 1950s–1971
"Look Sharp, Be Sharp, Go Army!"was a recruiting slogan in the 1950s and 1960s. The Big Picture,[disambiguation needed] public announcements on broadcast television, and highway roadway signs advertised the slogan during a time of a national draft of young men 18 to 34 years of age. The advantage of volunteering for Service, vice being drafted, was choosing the career field you wanted to serve and/or first unit or location of assignment.

I'm glad you explained the "Army of One" theme. When I first heard that motto, I pictured Rambo.

When I joined it was Army Strong, our current motto. I think the current one is the best out of all the ones you mentioned. The worst has got to be, "This is the Army." Worst motto ever.

Just a bit trivia...The "Be All You Can Be" campaign was the most successful in the history of the Army, and one of the most successful ad campaigns in the US. It ran for a little over 20 years.

I was "Be All You Can Be" during basic by the time i was ready to report I saw the transition to the Army of O.N.E. (Officers, NonCommissioned Officers, Enlisted), which then transcended to Army Strong. Like slogans we are in a military era of change that is not very longlived...slogans, uniforms, personnel, bases, equipment. In 14yrs of combat while serving this country I have seen three slogans, now three pt uniforms, two sets of dress uniforms, and now upcoming a fatigues replacement that made five different sets of uniforms for me(BDU's, DCU's, ACU's, OCP's, and Scorpions pending final approval)....the ridiculous part is everyone knows as leadership evolves and changes even the stuff thats not broke certain leadership envision a change that suits their personal perception of what we are supposed to be. To elaborate allot of future retirees have their hands out waiting for approval contracts to line their own pockets while subordinate members at lowest levels are cursed with the costs of these rapidly approved changes while personal supply clerks just order superiors the required uniforms and equipment free of charge(tax payers expense). Can we stick to one slogan, uniform, and trainig method for more than a few years? As long as the powers that be keep changing it I beleive not; praying someone of intelligence will recognize in a budget strained military the next best thing is not new propaganda and slogans or unecessary uniform changes in garrison. Hope is all we can ask for in the newer faster downsized military.

I use to love the "Be All You Can Be" where the commercials I grew up with and loved. We use to reinact the Airborne commercial when the Soldier's says "Good Morning 1SG!" and the 1SG just grunts. We even would make our own when we had downtime during FTX's Still my favorite motto.

You mean which ad campaign. The Army motto is This We'll Defend. I think the ad campaign I joined under was some variation of 'get money for college'. The worst was the lone troop running across the desert. 'be an individual' was a terrible ad campaign for the Army...

I still have the shirt the career counselor gave me when I joined (that was as close to a bonus as I got at that time). It was 3 sizes too big ( I was really skinny, 6'0" and 127lbs) at the time but I grew into it eventually. On the back it said "first jump army, second jump college" with a depiction of an airborne parachute drop.

We should never have stopped using that slogan.

When I joined the Reserve I came in under the "Be All That You Can Be" in Jan of 1997. Which ran from 1080 to 2001. The slogan "Army of ONE" which not many people understood ran from 2001-2006 stood for O.N.E. Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Enlisted. Hence "Army of ONE" from what I have been told. Be all that you can be was the theme, but my favorite commercial was "We do more before 9 am than most people do all day". That's the one where they're on a DZ, and the soldier has a cup of coffee for the First Sergeant. Not like anything else is going on. This always made me laugh.

The Army's motto has always been This We'll Defend. However, there have been numerous recruiting slogans and advertisement to characterize our Army. What's troubling is that our Soldiers actually think that our Army's motto is Army Strong. NCOs please educate our force and teach our warriors what our Motto is and forever Will be

OK, so obviously I didn't join the Army but the Navy slogan that they were using when I joined was;

“You Are Tomorrow; You Are The Navy” .

That is NOT the slogan that I remember when i think about the Navy though. I always think of the slightly older slogan;

“Navy. It’s Not Just A Job, It’s An Adventure”.

My first active enlistment (1979-1982) was under the "Today's Army Wants to Join You" but was soon changed to "Be all that you can be". When I came back in 1999, it was the "Army of one", which I could never explain well enough for civilians to understand. To be honest I had trouble understanding it for awhile too.

When I first joined in 97 it was be all you can be, and I still remember those commercials even to this day. Got out for a couple years and came back in 2006 for Army Of One and I was like WTF is this garbage and who was the genius that designed that campaign. Glad they got rid of that one, and can't wait for Army Strong to go away with that damned song that they always play.

I associate much more with "Be All You Can Be." And I think that remains the best Army slogan ever. Thanks for the link to the various slogans.

I enlisted during the "Army of One" campaign. What a hideously douchey commercial. Nothing say tough guy like some retard out running over sand dunes, by himself, dogtags bouncing around and catching the sunlight for every sniper within a 50 mile radius to key in on. And correct me if I'm wrong here, but didn't the Soldier in that commercial get chaptered out of the Army shortly after that campaign started, for cocaine use? Or is that just another urban legend? Either way, terrible. The Army should just fire everyone who ever had anything to do with any of those ad campaigns, and then go beat up the Marines and steal their slogan. I mean, who didn't get a 2 foot boner as a kid, watchign some dude fighting dragons and whatnot, and then being struck by lightning and turning into a jarhead in his dress uniform??

I joined under " Be All You Can Be" , and I may be biased on this. I think was the best! I was recruiting when Army of One came out. Didn't like at all, but I try to make the most of it. My job was to sell the empowerment of the Soldier and the enormous impact even one Soldier had in the Army. I really embraced and like "Army Strong". Really it's the same Soldier empowerment message as "Army of One". It's just in a different package to highlight the team concept

"Be all you can be" was my time back in 89(DEP)/90(BED).
Still remember the commercial with the college kids 1 male 1 female and he was asking her what did you do in the army? She says "Airborne" He looks up and says "Aiiirborrnnne". Thats the only one I remember. Recruiter didnt have to come to me though, I went to them.
Like father like son. My brother took the easy path though. He went AirForce "Aim High". Traitor.

Be All That You Can Be! This has a deeper meaning than people realize. It goes back to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that you can only be all you can be once you hit self-actualization. I do remember watching "In Living Color" where they sang the song "Be all that you can be, have a ugly wife and a terrible life in the Army!" I still laugh when I hear it in my head to this day.

While at West Point we moved to the slogan "The Army of One." O - Officers, N - Noncoms, E - Enlisted. But I felt this was contrary to the idea of teamwork since the first commercial i saw had everyone running one way, and this one soldier running the other. I heard from Recruiters that once this slogan came out it, the people who joined were harder to work with since they had the mindset it was an Army all about them.

I really like Army Strong, it was surprising to hear that it cost millions to come up with it, but I guess if you need to the do the market research that is the case.

I still like "Be All You Can Be". I loved it when I saw the Army Choir (with the Army band) sang it! They just dropped Army Strong from external advertising, as they determine that it doesn't resonate with the prospects. but still use it internally. I think that slogan is Ok. My suggestion for a new slogan: I am an American Soldier, the first line of the Soldiers Creed. That along with the creed itself does resonate with me!

Mid 60s had a slogan New! Action! Army! My favorite is BE ALL YOU CAN BE especially when it was sung. ARMY OF ONE could refer to teamwork (ONE team) or ONE individual; but because of the ambiguity, it did not resonate. ARMY STRONG is pretty good-I rate it a B. The new unofficial one I think identifies the AMERICAN SOLDIER. (Im not sure if the official one has been declared. If it were up to me, I would use the first line of the Soldiers Creed--"I am an American Soldier"

I started being all I could be while doing more before 9 than most people do all day. I retired while being Army Strong and in there somewhere, I was an Army of One. I went to basic in Jun 74 and I don't believe there was a slogan at that time since people were still hateful of Vietnam and the Military Personnel that served during that time. I was thankful that I didn't get more than spat on when I first came in. I am glad that the Armed Forces serving today is getting the recognition that it deserves. I am saddened that the Military has to pay Sports Networks for recognizing the Armed Forces personnel at Professional Sports games. I think since it is genuine that the Armed Forces protects this Country that it should be genuine when they get recognized during Professional Sporting Events. Every Veteran that has ever served in the Military deserves the respect and admiration for their devotion and dedication during their service in the Military and I applaud them all. I hope all the future personnel hearing the Recruiting Slogans understand the accomplishment of signing up and serving their Country.

Frankly the Army hasn't had a decent recruiting slogan since "I want you for the US ARMY" with Uncle Sam. You all should drag the 'authors' of those silly sayings behind a tank. For all the money spent on Madison Avenue geniuses, they couldn't come up with even one that expresses the pride, professionalism and spirit of being a soldier and defending your family, friends and country.
You'd have done just as well by saying, "Wanta do Marine stuff without the tough boot camp and sharp uniforms? Stop by and see an Army Recruiter".

Thank you SFC Davis for this trip down 'Army Memory Lane' as most of this was a distant memory for me. The slogan at the time of my enlistment in December '68 was "Look Sharp, Be Sharp, Go Army!" (Reminiscent of a Gillette razor blade commercial)
I also remember one for the Army Reserve which showed a muscular soldier in a OD tee shirt holding a bar bell about waist high and a young lad, presumably his son, standing under it as if to be lifting all of that weight alone. The slogan was "Strength in Reserve" I don't know how effective it was but I thought it was pretty cool at the time.

In my day it was "BE all you can be" but the re-enlistment one was not well thought out, they gave is bumper stickers which we altered :) Don't Stop now, Re-Enlist , which we cut up re-arranged to say "Don't Re-enlist, Stop now" Top was not amused "We do more before 9am than most people do all day" that's because we never went to sleep the night before :)

My situation was rather unusual. My dad, stationed in Taiwan (Republic of China), inexplicably brought home a July 1967 (Army) Aviation Digest - the first and only time - that he had picked up at work, I read that Digest “cover-to-cover” with growing interest. When I got to the article entitled “What is a WOC - something you ’fwow’” at a ’wabbit’?” I was smitten as it detailed the Warrant Officer Candidate program in the Army. I still have that copy, and I suppose one might say that I joined under that title/slogan.

That was my motivation. Messed around in college, lost my deferment then won the lottery ....... the draft lottery (#36). Like many young people in those days I chose to dodge the draft. Rather than going to Canada or elsewhere I figured out the perfect dodge! I ENLISTED!!!!. Chose the Army rather than the Air Force or Navy because it was only 3 years rather than four. I eventually re-uped and stayed seven and a half years active leaving as a Specialist E-6.

Well, there is actually not currently an Army Slogan. The Army let the contract for Army Strong expire last fiscal year. Currently the Army is debating on purchasing the rights to own Be all that you can be.

I joined under be all that you can be, but what really recruited me was G.I. Joe, an American Hero.

Be all you can be was the full time slogan but the ad that got me was the one with paratroopers jumping out of a C-130 and the voice over was " we do more before 9am than most people do all day." Being a C 130 mechanic I took offense to that lol who do you think got that plane ready 4-5 hours before they marched out there just to jump out of a perfectly good plane?

To me slogans had little or nothing to with entering Army it was pride in uniform work and dress , our paratrooper work uniform in my opinion looked better than most others Starched Clean all insignia where in full bright colors , JUMP WINGS , COMBAT INFINTRY BADGE , UNIT INSIGNIA ,82ND ,101ST ,AIRBORNE 8TH , 1ST ARMY , 1ST CAV. If ONE is an acronym for Officers, Non-commissioned, an Enlisted for all of Army personnel nobody told whoever made that acronym about Warrants. At least the Army Of One slogan did not last long. Army Strong is so much better.

As a field recruiter from 71-80 The slogan I remember the best was “Keep America Green, Join The Army. I always thought it was dumb and I always thought NW Ayers was vastly overrated but I always had fun with the Navy’s slogan, Sailors Have more fun and the The Marines, Looking looking for a few good men. I never lost a men or women to either of those Services.

As someone said, I was "invited" to take a physical and then I enlisted to get choice of training. I think the slogan, if there was one, was "Uncle Sam Wants You," but I don't honestly remember. It was in 1963!

I never joined the Army but I remember the mid 1960's Army recruiting slogan TV ad. It showed a West Point Class and it was the "New Action Army." Followed by a song that went "If you're good enough to get in, you'll serve your country well." "Great moments can be yours in the "New Action Army." I had to admit that it was a catchy tune.

Personally, I didn't need a "slogan" to join the service. That was set up in my own mind long before my graduation from High School, but my original intention was to look into the possibility. of college before joining. No-one in my family , as far as I know had ever attended college before and although my grades were pretty good, I was still cautious about it! In regard to service slogans I had uncles who had served in the Army Air Force and Navy, so I was fully aware of what the service offered at that time. I never got the chance to look into college, since my Father came to me with a request, the first I ever remember as a request rather than a "strong suggestion!" My Father, for whom I had the greatest love and respect, asked of me a favor. Such, was to join the Navy, immediately, so he could take my Mother with him on a job offer in Turkey as the Maintenance Superintendent for a large dam project there. There was no way I could refuse this man, who had done so much with so little for me. He guaranteed that when my enlistment was over he would send me to college. Unfortunately, he passed away when he was in Turkey, my Mother was devastated, and never really got over his passing, so I stayed in the service, and finally got my degrees when I got out. In regard to the "Service Slogan" during the year I enlisted (Navy - 1954), I couldn't tell you, but the "slogan" I enlisted under was a favor I felt that I owed my Father!!

After giving the idea some further thought, I remember a slogan that caught my eye when I was in High School. I am not big on ordering people around, bragging about what I can do, and I do not have much patience with those that do! However, this slogan was rather unique: "Silent Service!" I remember reading about it, why the slogan had come into use and what it meant on several different planes of thought. Now I admit that I forgot about that in my hurry to enlist, my father's help in teaching me to weld, my schooling in which I majored in Welding and Forging, and the offer of three jobs on HS Graduation. Boot Camp took all of my concentration, and when I read about submarines in a small pamphlet following Boot Camp, it all came back with a rush. Submarine School scared the hell out of me, gave me a lot of great information, and my first dive was a thrill and I knew I was in the right place!l. Here was a war machine, that did the job, without a lot of HooRah, and false promises, one which did it silently, and one where the crew knew to keep their mouth shut, and limited the bragging to inside the subs hull! It was also a very special place where, if you worked hard, used the training, listened to what you were told, you truly became a submariner by rank and badge, but more importantly in the area of sea service, which is what I was looking for! Of course, as a young sailor, I had a few hiccups along the way, but all in all I learned my craft, and my place in this service! Yes, this slogan did have an effect on me, sometimes forgotten, but always there when I needed it! -- "DIESEL BOATS FOREVER!! (Grin!!)

Being from a small town in western Kansas I was in between the Look Sharp, Be Sharp, Go Army to The Army wants you. Being a small town everyone new everyone and some of these folks served on the draft board and that was a good way to get drafted so I decided to join and get the job I wanted that way I could beat the draft and not get stuck in a job I hated so before I graduated high school I signed up and in July of 1971 entered the Army only to find out with the lottery my number turned out to be 324, wow, but it was the best choice I have ever made and would do it over again. The only bad part was how we were being treated by our own people which today is still hard for me to go out in public with any kind of markers on me that says I was in the Army. I left the Army in 4/1977 and it took me till 2006 to finally join the American Legion which when I look back was a big mistake on my part.

Back when I joined....it was "Look Sharp, Be Sharp, Go Army!"....that was 50 years ago!

Army of One was the worst. Saw so many that couldn't handle the group structure, and saw themselves as individuals, instead of part of the whole. I still remember the first commercial I saw.
A "huahh" soldier running through the desert. Then you notice he is out in the field, incomplete Uniform. You see troops run past him. Trucks, Helicopters, Tanks . Then you realize he is running in the opposite direction, of what appears to be a large battle. Then the logo pops up "Army of One."
Sure thought that was a great message to potential recruits.
It became the catch phrase for NCO's who didn't like the soldiers attitude or as a reference to a lazy soldier.
Yupp, never liked that one.

I had to look that up: "Look Sharp, Be Sharp, Go Army!" My personal slogan was, "Dodge the Draft...enlist and get it over with!" After returning from Vietnam in June 1970, I chilled out in the Sacramento Field Office of the 115th MI Group and prepared to work for the California State Bureau of Investigation after I completed my BA degree at Sacto State College. I met a young lady and married her a week after she turned 20 - I didn't want to marry a "tenny-bopper!" She decided that I should re-enlist so she could see Europe at a leisurely pace. We stayed there on-and-off for 12 1/2 years.

I joined both the Army 74 and the Air Force 79 as far as I know there was not slogan. If there was I never knew it. Didn't join because of a recruiting slogan or campaign. Joined for pure unadulterated pride in my country. My father was a WWII Navy veteran. Total I served 10 years. Wished I had served more.

I didn't have the money to return to college in the fall of 1963 and I knew my name was soon to come up for the draft so in July of that year I joined the Air Force. In those days the Uncle Sam poster down at the post office proclaimed, "Uncle Sam Wants You." He didn't care which branch you joined.

The old Army slogan, "Look Sharp, Be Sharp, Go Army." makes me wonder, was it borrowed from the 1952 Gillette advertising slogan, "Look Sharp, Feel Sharp, Be Sharp." Gillette sponsored the Friday Night Fights. That jingle played well into the sixties.

I had a few, Starting With "Today's Army Wants To Join You" (1971-1980). Then it was "Be All You Can Be" (1980-2001). And then "Army of one" (2001-2006). And ending with Army Strong " (2006-Present). I know you ask for one and it was the first one, but I was under all of these.

Google says it was "Today's Army Wants to Join You" . I don't remember ever hearing that slogan in a commercial.

I'm all in for "Be all you can be."

I do like Army Strong.

I was never a fan of "An Army of one." For what it's worth it doesn't promote teamwork. It promotes individuality. We're a team. We defend the democracy, we don't practice it is something we used to say.

You get what you put in when you serve. Sure you get screwed sometimes but you learn to deal with it. It makes you a better soldier which makes you a better person.

“Army. Be All You Can Be” in 1981, and that was still the slogan when I was an Army Recruiter from 1989-1992.

I never liked “An Army of One”. I can guarantee some stupid civilian that was never in the Army had created that slogan.
