I have not researched this, but I am told, and I fully believe, that the Army created two of the most beloved acronyms to have made it into "common usage":

FUBAR and SNAFU.

In addition to this, the Army taught me that the word STEAL was actually an acronym, as well.

Jarhead: reportedly the Mason Jar Company quit with jars during WW2 and made Marines' helmets... Scuttlebutt: a water fountain or the gossip/rumors spread there between gulps... I liked the expression 'Drive on rag'. We used that a lot when we 'beat the bush' with the 'grunts'. A drive on rag was part of the medic's arm slings which turned into bandanas around our necks. We would use them to wipe our faces of the endless sweat hiking the woods caused!

Army which gave me the phrase while in PLDC in Bad Tolz, Germany: 'Figure the Odds". I still use this phrase frequently when asked a question that really doesn't need an answer such as "Is it quitting time?" or at Ft Hood while on field maneuvers "Will it rain today?"

I think only Vietnam War Vets will remember this one. When things got really bad - and there was nothing that you could do about it, when S**t hit the fan, and other distraught times, we were known to say "It don't mean nothin'." Over and over, again. Even though - in reality - it meant a lot. Unfortunately, I heard that phrase many times during my tour of duty.

So I'm biased, but for a good reason, that is: it's The Navy, hands down! Every service has GREAT slang, much of it shared between them. I almost cried watching "Heartbreak Ridge", from nostalgia over the dialogue! So much of it began in the misty past that it's iffy to say where it started. Except for the obvious ones, of course. For example, sailors are less likely to speak of gooks, gomers, and ground pounding, because of less actual experience with them. A few of my favorites are:

(running) Hot, straight, and normal. A torpedo, but used for anything.
Black and bitter. coffee the way I like it.
Surface skimmer. an underprivileged sailor, that is, a non-submariner.
Leap if you're feeling froggy! i.e.: Ya wanna fight? Come on!

It stands for "rear echelon mother-fucker." I had never seen the f" word in any reputable magazine until I saw the term mentioned in TIME Magazine in the mid-1970s. And, there it was in an article describing the war and who did what while in-country.
I served as a grunt, aka infantry soldier,
in the Army. I was a combat infantry platoon leader at the age of 21 and have always been proud of referring to myself as a "grunt."Google defined the grunt as "military door-kickers and trigger pullers" as well as "the pointy end of the spear. The REMF, on the other hand, was a soldier who was very far from the so-called "front line" although who was still exposed to enemy fire and being overrun in a basecamp.

Undoubtedly the Marine Corps has the best phrases, spearheaded by the most widely-used and versatile term of affirmation: oorah!

Historically stemming from recon Marines in 1st Amphibious Reconnaissance Company during the Korean War, the beloved phrase began as “aarugha” to simulate the klaxon alarm heard on board submarines as they began their decent (TECOM, 2004). The motivational phrase was soon shortened to “oorah,” and continued to pick-up its many nuances and variances over the next few decades. These variances include:

rah: quickened motived affirmation; signifies obedience and acknowledgment of a statement; can also be used by NCOs and SNCOs to acknowledge a subordinate’s greeting, particularly if the higher ranking individual is in a bad mood. When used with a middle tone, communicates discontentment with an order.

rah?: (akin to the 5 tones of Thai, apply the siang jad-dta-waa, or rising tone, as if asking a question) The Marine is now confused whether or not the statement motivates them, or even whether the order or whatever is being said makes any sense whatsoever.

err: despite an entirely different spelling, this is synonymous with rah, though is used to express a greater caliber of discontentment.

yut: again, completely different spelling, but has gained popularity, particularly within the Lance Corporal Underground; often used to exercise a level of belligerences; sometimes immediately followed with “kill!”.

This post presents only a basic introduction into this marvelous phrase; over the years and across the globe, Marines have shaped and molded the phrase in a multitude of fashions, some wonderful, yet some grievous; it will be fascinating to see how it continues to evolve as the Corps presses on.

After all the years have past I think most of the Slang Phrases have transferred from one branch to the other and now a lot of the same Slang is in all branches.

Navy. Since SNAFU means Situation Normal All FOWLED Up it is probably of Naval origin, not Army.
When it's so cold that "iron balls are frozen off a brass monkey". From wooden hulled, sailing ship days!

USMC has the best slang. The one that always standed out was "Boot", meaning a new Marine right out of training, wearing his combat boots with jeans, and a gun ho USMC tshirt with a fresh high and tight, while on liberty.

I think the Navy has the best slang phrases. Bravo Zulu I believe is every branch, Devil Dog is Marine Corps, Jerry-Rigged is Marine Corps and my favorite Navy slang phrase is "Hurry Up and Wait." ( I think I've heard that one in all our military branches.)

I don't know on this one. I grew up a dependent and was around all of the branches until I enlisted. I can tell you my least favorite; "We are hunting FOD today:" I wasn't assigned to the flightline and when we got pulled, it meant hours in the hot San Antonio sun where the tarmac and runway was 100 degrees hotter. Favorite was probably "If you got them, smoke them" which meant a break from whatever we were doing in the hot sun.

Every military branch has a slang which is used amongst the personnel serving their country.
My favorite is “Slow Is Smooth, Smooth Is Fast”. A term with many interpretations. Not really sure where it originated, Special Ops? I interpret it as practice, practice, practice to accomplish your mission flawlessly. Though, maybe I’m misjudging the real meaning.
Then, “I Have Your Six”. Which is self explanatory.

Army, best slang I came upon while stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. as a bridge engineer was FTA. This of course was Fun, Travel, Adventure. Some interpretation was different. When some became angry this slang was used.

Having served in USAF AND USN, and with considerable time alongside Army and Marines, and time with USCG ("You HAVE TO go out. You DONT HAVE TO come back!), I think ALL BRANCHES have deep lore and slang, but the edge goes to the maritime branches simply due to the extended environment of the sea, as well as shoreline. HOWEVER, I ADVISE ALL READING THIS TO FIND " A Dictionary of American Military Slang" circa 1984. Hopefully it's been updated. But I found it in the Basement Library at NOSC PANAMA CITY, FL. when I was in dive school. IT covered slang going back to the American Revolution!! SO FUNNY, I WAS CRYING BECAUSE I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD!!! Some of it was serious- the first time I ever heard about the Civil War guys saying they'd "seen the elephant " . But my favorite? As a demo man, the WWII usage of "Fire in the hole" for VD!!

My Rifle – The Creed of a United States Marine
This creed, accredited to Major General William H. Rupertus, USMC (Deceased) and still taught to Marines undergoing Basic Training at the Recruit Depots at San Diego and Parris Island, was first published in the San Diego Marine Corps Chevron March 14, 1942.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will …
My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit….
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. History of the Creed:

In a conversation which took place sometime early in 1942 between BGen William H. Rupertus, USMC, Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, San Diego, and Capt Robert P. White, USMCR, Public Relations Officer of the base, the general stated that his men must be made to understand “that the only weapon which stands between them and Death is the rifle…they must understand that their rifle is their life…it must become a creed with them.” Whereupon Capt White suggested that the general write an editorial to that effect with the tentative title of “My Rifle is My Life.” The general, who had won the Distinguished Marksmanship Badge as a second lieutenant in 1915, liked the title but disagreed with the idea of an editorial which he considered would sound like a sermon. Instead, he felt that the rifle creed should be “something so deep, a conviction so great, a faith so lasting that no one should have to be preached to about it.”

The very next morning, the general appeared in the captain’s office with a “random scrap of paper” on which were penciled the notes which have since become the rifle creed. Capt White’s part in the final production of the creed is best expressed in his own words: “All I did was to translate it, type it, suggest a few different word usages and add a line here and there to complete the General’s thought. My job was that of an editor; and no editor could have bettered the General’s piece in that particular.”
