Branch Insignia relates to MOS Some units do wear a unit insignia...ie, SF, instead of individual MOS insignia. In an ordinary unit, let's say an Infantry company... line Soldiers will wear their cross rifles, commo folks will were their crossed signal flags. Maintenance/Ordinance/Medics...all have their own insignia. NOW, there used to be a time when you were assigned to a unit, you wore that specific insignia. I was a mortarman (Infantry) assigned to the Armored Cav. The CSM at the time made us all were the armor insignia. As the senior Infantryman in the Squadron, I put an end to that. Unless you are going to a Cav unit when sometimes they like to be special and want to wear cross sabers. I would show up with your MOS branch and if the unit has some kind of SOP where they wear something different your squad leader or platoon sergeant will let you know. Good luck. Branch insignia-other
a. Regimental collar insignia.
(1) Regimental collar insignia is the Soldier’s branch insignia on which the numerical designation of the regiment is
affixed. Regimental collar insignia is worn in lieu of the branch insignia by officers and enlisted Soldiers affiliated with
infantry, armor, field artillery, air defense artillery, cavalry, special forces, or aviation regiments. Soldiers affiliated
with these regiments will also wear the regimental collar insignia when not assigned to the regiment, except as
provided in paragraph 21–9. A Soldier affiliated with a regiment but having a branch other than the currently assigned
branch will wear the assigned branch insignia without a numeral. Soldiers will not wear numerals designating
battalions on regimental collar insignia. Regimental collar insignia is provided at no cost to enlisted Soldiers.
Commanders will permit enlisted Soldiers who are affiliated with the regiment to retain regimental collar insignia when
reassigned from the affiliated regiment.
(2) See DA Pam 670–1 for additional guidance on positioning of regimental numbers for specific combat arms
branches.
b. Other. Branch insignia for Soldiers not affiliated with an infantry, armor, field artillery, air defense artillery,
cavalry, special forces, or aviation regiment, except as provided for in paragraph 21–9, wear their assigned basic
branch insignia. As an option, Soldiers who are not affiliated with one of the above regiments, but who are assigned to
a color-bearing regiment or separate TOE battalion of their branch, may wear the branch insignia with the numerical
designation of the battalion or regiment affixed, when approved by the ACOM, ASCC, and/or DRU. All optional
branch insignia are authorized for wear only while personnel are assigned to the designated unit. Soldiers will not
purchase optional branch insignia using appropriated funds. Commanders will not require Soldiers to purchase optional
branch insignia. Insignia representing regimental affiliation
a. Authorization. AR 670–1 authorizes insignia used to represent regimental affiliation to consist of either the RDI or
DUI. A Soldier’s Regimental affiliation using an RDI is based on a Soldier’s branch/corps/special branch as determined
by PMOS or specialty. A Soldier’s Regimental affiliation using a DUI is based on a unit in which the Soldier is serving or
previously successfully served. Soldiers may wear the RDI for their affiliated regiment or may wear the DUI for a unit in
which they are serving or have previously successfully served based off their assignment history as indicated in their
personnel record.
b. How worn. The RDI or DUI, when worn as insignia to represent regimental affiliation, are worn as outlined in paragraph 19–22. Soldiers (except chaplains, general officers, a CSM assigned as the SEAC, the SMA's enlisted staff members) wear the DUI centered above the nameplate on the black pullover cardigan, with the top edge of the insignia 1/4
inch below the top edge of the patch on the cardigan. Soldiers assigned to units not authorized the DUI wear the RDI on
the black pullover cardigan in the same manner as the DUI(see fig 19–135). Chaplains wear their branch insignia, general officers wear the RDI, a CSM assigned as the SEAC wears the SEAC insignia, the SMA and enlisted staff members
assigned to the office of the SMA wear the SMA insignia in the same manner. All Soldiers may adjust the placement of
the DUI or RDI, up or down on the patch, to allow for large size DUI or RDI, or to adjust to body configuration.
