Follow orders reguardless, if you must question that order do it later. Mission first! I&#39;m not saying we were always right or on top of the game, but for me I gave it my best. Nothing beats on the job training. Courses can teach theories, but nothing prepares you for leadership so much that you can just walk into the job and be like I got this and do a great job. You have to bring your leadership style and be willing to learn and develop. The best school leadership training I&#39;ve gotten was at BLC during a class on how to make decisions. I don&#39;t recall the name of the class, or any statements made; but the gist of the class was the frequently we have to make the best of BAD decisions and deal with the outcome. In real life sometimes there aren&#39;t win wins, and sometimes the right decision isn&#39;t clear. At the time I was in my NCO leadership course was a refresher course of ALS. Also there is no substitute for leadership than that of using your job knowledge and classroom teachings and putting them to use, combat does this well, in the words of Maverick, &quot;you dont have time to think, if you think youre dead.&quot; Response by SSgt Nicholas Merchant made Jan 28 at 2017 6:02 AM 2017-01-28T06:02:21-05:00 2017-01-28T06:02:21-05:00 TSgt Private RallyPoint Member 2326857 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Having been through ALC, ALS, NCOPEC, and a course in supervising civilians the one thing I can say for certain is to treat others how you want to be treated. The &quot;do as I say, not as I do&quot; never works because you see for yourself it doesn&#39;t work, but so do your subordinates if you try it with them. Be the example. I&#39;m not saying be &quot;perfect&quot;, but don&#39;t be afraid to admit your shortcomings and work on them-actively and publicly. Those will garner more respect than aNY thing else. ALS attempts to right the wrongs and misinformation that most young junior enlisted have seen and heard, but most people walk out of it and forget everything they learned and back to business as usual once theye returned to their shops. I think some of it has to do with enlisted leaders doing the same and shouting about how it&#39;s all theory, it&#39;s useless, and that&#39;s not the way things are done here...because it undermines how they have been conducting themselves aND suddenly they hAve to become acountable to those lower ranking than they. ALS can be the most helpful courses if you take it to heart and apply what you learn. ALS actually gives you basic tools on how to take care of your people as well as how to deal with some common infractions as a young supervisor. Just my 2 cents.
