A large part of the reason is that I like to see the sights and if I have my own car I can take my time and stop and look whenever I see anything interesting. For that same reason I try to avoid the interstates. More to see on the back roads. An example is taking Hwy 90 down the coast instead of I 10. Hwy 90 runs right on the water for most of the way from FL to TX. Almost anywhere that you want to go there is an older state of federal highway with lots of interesting things to see. Another benefits is that I have my own car when I get there and am not dependent upon someone else for transportation or having to rent a car. Once upon a time I occasionally took a plane but that is such a pain in the rear now that I don't even consider it and when you get to your destination you still have to rent a car. I had rather have my own.
