Which movie scared you so much that it still bothers you today?

Jaws celebrates its 40th anniversary in June. It freaked me out so much that not only did I leave marks in the armrest at the theater, I could barely swim that summer of 1975 in a lake, let alone an ocean. So...what other movies do you recall the same way and why?

It's a tie between " The Exorcist " and " The Hills Have Eyes " . Classic films. They both have a real background behind them. That alone is disturbing.

LTC Gavin Heater for me seriously it would have to have been Stripes, to me this movie signaled the end of the Army as I knew it during my first enlistment. I look at the Army today and see a strange resemblance to the movie. DS Hulka not withstanding.

My parents got a baby sitter for my sister and me. We had HBO at the time. We were pretty young, six and four I think. The baby sitter watched Jaws with us. We would not walk on the floor for a week. That movie still scares me.

I got to go to the master - Alfred Hitchcock - THE BIRDS! I'll never forget the first time I saw it, scared the crap out of me. I still think of it today! He was truly the master.

I would have to say the original "Alien" was the scariest for me growing up. I was 9 and my father took me to see it. It affected me walking alone in the woods, going to sleep in the dark, and being in abandoned buildings for several years.

More than any movie, the video game Silent Hill 2 scared the shit out of me. The sound work done in that game was amazing and made full use of my surround sound in the barracks. There was one room that was creepy as hell. There were never any monsters in it, but you dreaded having to go through it because of the sound work done.

Jaws, still creeps me out, also it solidified my fear of bats. I was about 8 or 9, my brothers and I decided to watch Jaws while the parents were out with friends. Just as Jaws started to attack, a bat came swooping down at us from the other room. Still cannot stand bats, or swimming in anything other than a pool.

The original Exorcist. I saw it when I was a little girl and had nightmares. I watched in once again in 2005 and had nightmares for a week. Never again. You can not pay me to watch that movie!

Jaws was a big one for me. I got my PADI Open Water Diver certification in June of 1982...when Jaws was on the forefront of everyone's minds and doing my open water certification was scary. Add to that the fact that my area in Southern California has been plagued by Great White Shark attacks, and the fact that I surf (the majority of the attacks have been on surfers), and the whole thought of even entering the water scares me.

That said, the movie The Exorcist scared me even more...and still does to this day.

LTC Gavin Heater, the 1976 movie Marathon Man, starring Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier set the profession of dentistry back twenty years! Olivier played a WWII Nazi dentist returning to New York for his fortune. He tortured Jews in the concentration camps, and he tortured Dustin Hoffman by drilling into his un-anesthetized front tooth to elicit information. It was so realistic I almost could feel it, as did many others! The dental profession disliked the movie intensely!

THis is telling my age but FAIL SAFE (no not what you are thinking)... a black and white film made in the heart of the early cold war where a US bomber mistakenly gets the go code (the fail safe) and hits Moscow with a nuke...B58 hustlers scare the crap out of the Russians and they built the Foxbat to catch them.... The Russians said if we nuked one of our own cities they would not retaliate with a full nuclear exchange... so a lone B-58 flies over NYC and drops the bomb. There is a scene just before detonation where the birds all take off...they sense it coming...

The pilot then takes his...I will not be captured needle and pricks himself with it saying " A matador, a matador"... This was an "adult" movie for sure, and I was only seven or eight...I will never forget the fear of nuclear holocaust it put in me! Different kind of scary film.

Poltergeist, the original. The new one looks terrifying and I can't wait to see it. I would also have to add Event Horizon to that list. The exorcist terrified me as well, but it has lost its luster since I have gotten older. Oh, Alien & Aliens as well.

The Exorcist at the time was thought provoking. Texas Chainsaw Massacre - first saw at a drive in - and later indoors where they had a guy running around with a running chainsaw. I'm over both now.
