(Disclosure, from those I've only been stationed in Germany). As you get more senior overseas slots will become more limited just because there are fewer available. Take Italy or Germany when you can. Germany was nice too, but Germany has much more troops than Italy. Take Italy when you can. Bragg and Campbell are so huge they'll always be around. When I got to pick, it was decided by where I wanted to go. Meaning, I always picked the place overseas that sounded like fun to me. I always figured the job was the job... May as well do it someplace fun. Admittedly, this is not the best answer when one is trying to set up one’s career track (advancement wise). At least that is what I’ve heard. It always worked out well for me. They always had to send me stateside. I only picked a stateside assignment once in my career and it was the only one I would change, if given the opportunity. If you are looking for career advancement, then an active or recently discharged service member should answer the question. If you're interested in stuff like travel, recreation, housing, shopping, then continue to read my answer. I don't have much experience with Ft Campbell and Ft Lewis, so I won't speculate

Ft Bragg: BIG airborne installation. Lots of different units. Good on-post shopping and recreation facilities. Housing in the nearby communities, such as Fayetteville, NC, is good.

Germany and Italy. If you want to travel throughout Europe either of these locations would be good. DoD recreational facilities in Europe are very good. Climate in Italy is milder than Germany. Italy also has many major cultural and historical locations you can visit. Germany also has historical locations of interest--many related to WWII. Both countries have cities with great shopping and entertainment locations. Of course, Germany has Oktoberfest. Between the two, I would take Italy because of the climate. I was infantry at the time, and if you end up in th 173rd in Italy there is a work hard play hard mentality in terms of field time and off time, however it was my favorite assignment.

However, I'd say part of it comes down to you as an individual and your interests. Some of these duty stations lends themselves to certain opportunities. Another factor is units and commands themselves, which generally changes every 3 or 4 years as command teams rotate out.
