B. Second rank (top, right side), CAPT (O6), USN; left and lower right are Petty Officer ranks PO1 and PO3, respectively... and of course there was no Google consultation here, just years of working Jointly! Now, hopefully all is correct here, or I'm sure that our RP Navy personnel will have a field day! lol :)

Considering I wore the bottom right a long time ago and the left one when I retired, I would be more than Happy to return your salute but it really isn't necessary.

The poor PO1s working joint assignments on Bagram first few years returning salutes from Majors that got the drop on them... or MSGs and below that had never worked joint before... Never understood why they would think a 20 yo should be wearing COL rank

The Top image on the right does. The one on the left is a First Class Petty Officer (E-6) in the Navy and the Third one is a Third Class Petty Officer in the Navy (E-4). The only one you salute is the second one Navy Captain (O-6).

For Sailors that get saluted, the correct way to handle this is return the salute and then correct the Soilder or Airman. Don't let them keep saluting Petty Officers as you are not helping them learn, but using their lack of knowledge against them.

Fresh out of boot camp, I (like most other Boot PFC and LCpl's) would salute just about anything and anybody. So, for me the answer was, "All of the above." Later, after I learned the difference, I would walk across the street or duck into the barracks to avoid saluting. As a WO/CWO, I was fine with just being respected for my contributions--wasn't much of a salute seeker.

The Eagle.....I understand the confusion from a distance.

I personally have heard of a cadet being saluted by a MAJ because he saw a silver shiny rank that was circular. He laughed it off saying I thought you were too young to be a LTC.

I personally saluted a SPC back in the beret wearing day because the unit crest looked almost exactly like a MAJ rank from a distance (only difference was there was a bar thing under it, that I did not notice until it was too late). I played it off and dropped my salute fast as he was returning my salute.

When I was a Marine we had a TAD to Patrick AFB and as we were walking to the chow hall or whatever the USAF calls it we happened by a USAF 2nd Lt. We did not salute because we didn't notice him at first. When he challenged us one of the Sgts with us went on this very long explanation how we were Marines which came under the Department of the Navy which was a sea faring fighting military under & naval customs we were prohibited from saluting on USAF bases unless inside and then only to the base C.O. It was a very impressive talk. Short story the air force Lt. shook his head up & down said he understood and we should get to the chow hall before it closed.

You would salute B the Second rank, it is a Full Bird Coronal ( or a Captain in the U.S. Navy) the other two are Petty Officers in the Navy. A would be a Petty officer 1st Class and then C would be a Petty officer 3rd Class.

When I first went to Walter Reed, I accidentally saluted more than a few petty officers. They're used to it and usually laugh. I also learned that as a "captain", when you're talking to Navy, do everything via phone because it will get you WAY faster responses.

Wearing the Naval Service Uniform (NSU's / Peanut Butters) this happens alot on Marine Corps Bases. They are taught that anything shiney from a distance they should salute. It is not just junior Marines, I have had a GySgt salute me when walking towards the shoppette on base.

Good question, PO1 Private RallyPoint Member. My vote (/guess) is the second one - the one that looks like an Army O-6 rank insignia.

Isn't it interesting how difficult ranks can be between services? Especially Navy and Army. I remember when I was a young troop and we were at a Navy base for amphibious operations training (1976, I think). One of my Army buddies "chewed out" a Sailor for not saluting him. The Soldier was a SP4 (E-4)! The Army guys had some fun with the Sailor, then told him the real deal, and everybody had a good laugh.

B. that is Captain in Sea Services. and Colonel in USA USMC USAF. The others are Petty Officer ranks (equiv to NCO in non sea services) Interesting how it looks similar to Petty Officer 3rd Class (no 3) especially on combat uniforms.( Sometimes its hard to see whether to salute in those uniforms until youre right up close!)

OK...I can't believe the number of people that don't recognize the ranks of other services. lol In military school we were required to learn all of them. I understand the from a distance I thought...thing. But, when you have a picture of the insignia??? This is a little sad...lol
