We had a real toxic regimental commander. Didn't matter how well we won the battle, he was always angry and would chew someone out at the hotwash/AAR (After Action Review). I was the S3 Air for the OPFOR, and after several requests for air support, I responded and got both OPFOR fix and rotary wing into the battle; which added to the full realism of battle. It was glorious. The regimental commander disapproved of this action and screamed through the Mike to "get the effing aircraft out of here." At the hotwash the regimental commander called me up in front of the entire regiment (enlisted and officers alike) and screamed at me, nonstop for ten minutes. Spittal in my face type screaming. When it was over, I was visibly shaken, but everyone at the hotwash patted me on the back and said, "welcome to the club." That evening the regimental chaplain checked on me, then went into the commanders tent and heard him scream "DON'T YOU EVER TREAT YOUR SOLDIERS LIKE THAT AGAIN, EVER!" It was a great lesson in what bad and good leadership looks like. I looked over all of the launcher firing circuits and the one missile firing circuit that should've launched the was the emergency firing circuit its just a straight shot off of battery system. I traced the wires all the way up to the missile launcher to the retractable firing squibs, that once extended connect to the missile and applies power to the missile. I removed both small covers to discover that the wires had corroded and broke free and no matter what was done the missile rocket motor wouldn't fire.
I at the time was amazed by this because I knew there was a "PM" for this and since the forward launcher takes on a lot of water when the waves crash over the front of the ship. I checked the "PM" schedule to see if it was done and by whom, since I had only been up in the forward launcher only a couple weeks I inherited the responsibility of the situation.
There was an investigation went all the way to captains mast and what was on trail was my character and military career. My chief warrant defended me, he brought to bear my actions in properly maintaining the aft missile launcher and personal character. I was read a list of potential charges under the "UCMJ" which put the fear of god in me, pleaded my case to the captain, brought up all the information that was learned from the incident, both good and bad. My chief warrant officer talked a bit and then I was asked to leave the room. I stood outside of that door for what seemed like an eternity, I then was asked to go back in to get the verdict. The captain then read off the list of potential charges, he then stunned me with what happened next, he couldn't see ruining a fine naval career, but something still had to be done. He then took the official list of charges, we both signed it and he put it in the top drawer of his desk. He informed me that this will sit in his desk for a year and if there wasn't any other issues he would tear it up and it wouldn't make it to my service record.
I then asked him if I could get a copy of the list of charges for my self, I took this copy, high lighted everything with a yellow high lighter, had it laminated and posted it on the exit side of the door leading out of the missile launcher control room as a reminder to me and everyone else that there will be no more pencil whipping "PM's" and if caught the consequences would be sever.
I really want to thank this man for putting his career on the line for me and this event changed my life like no other, and it affects even everything that I do today. A few days later I received an Humanitarian Transfer to Scott AFB, Illinois. I was given the job at the time as Information Clerk with Base Operations, Scott AFB, Illinois. Essentially, it was my job to direct pilots to the proper window to file their flight plans, get weather reports, announce arrivals and departures, and dispatch vehicle drivers to deliver and pickup crews to and from aircraft and other base amenities. Every weekday morning the Base Commander would arrive promptly at 0700 hours for his daily briefing. For six months I was greeted by him cheerfully and pleasantly. During this time he never mentioned my "MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, PWEASE!" announcements. This day, however, he approached me in my announcement booth, held his hand over the desk microphone and asked, "Airman Clayton, when are you going to get your teeth repaired so you don't lisp!" I advised him that I was waiting on the Base Dental Clinic to give me an appointment and that I called weekly, with no progress. He told me to proceed immediately to the Dental Clinic and to have teeth by the end of the week. I walked the four or five long blocks to the Clinic, and was met at the door by a Full Bull Colonel and most of his staff. I was escorted to a chair, grilled on my condition, x-rayed, and probed and told to come back the next A.M. I did and was given a temporary set of plastic teeth. A few weeks later, I was called back and given a new set of metal take in and take out teeth. For the rest of my tour at Scott, the Base Commander would salute me with his thumb as he entered Base Operations and grin broadly. I can't remember exactly his full name, but behind his back, other officers and senior staff would refer to him as "WILD BILL ARMSTRONG"! I of course called him yes sir and no sir, Colonel. There is much more to the story of my assignment to Scott AFB, Illinois and I hope to inform and entertain with the full story at a later time and opportunity. CMSgt Elbert E. Morales Club competition while stationed in Germany. Having just been promoted to Sgt. E-5 only (2 weeks) to the selection. I was needing to prepare for the first of (5) Competition Boards that were to be held over the next several months. While trying to get my NCO’s handbook prepared on my Team members. My Squad Leader came into my study area and told me to report to the Motor Pool where the Platoon was having a practice B.I.I. Layout of Everything assigned to our APC’s. I informed My squad leader that I was preparing for the 1st. Competition Board that was in one month. He told me he didn’t care one bit that I was selected to Represent the Company and that he wanted my arse in the Motor Pool. I said I’d be right there, but being as how this preparation was so important and lots of studying had to be done. I stopped by the 1SG’s office to let him know that my squad leader was not going to give me ample time to prepare for the Board Competition. The 1SG. then told me to take whatever time I needed in preparation for the Board and that he would handle my squad leader. After talking to another Soldier who had made it to all (5) Competition Boards and was Selected into the Elite Sgt. Moralas Club. I was ready for the Board. This Board consisted of 5 1SG’s. Asking every question under the sun about the Military and also any and all information about my Team members. Example; all their full names, DOB’s, how many kids each member had and their wife’s name. What kind of heat did they have if they lived off Post and so on. Once the Competition was over, I was selected as the winner and would be advancing to the 2nd Board. I won the 2nd Board at the Brigade level, then went on to win the 3rd Competition Board as well. Going up against E-6’s, E-7’s & E-8’s as the only E-5 in each of the Competition Boards. Sadly to say I had to withdraw from the Competition and take a Hardship Discharge to help take care of my younger siblings after a suicide attempt by my father. But to this day, I owe all my Full Career and how I turned out as an NCO due to studying, caring for my Soldiers and trying to live my Military Career like Sgt. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity and reconstituted the staff from the XO on down. All positions were filled except for the S-1 but I had just inherited a PAC NCO, one SFC Fletcher who would become instrumental in what was to come next.
As it happened, I was attending a political luncheon and was seated next to a man who was the aid to a senator, had been on the job about thirty days and exuded a military presence.
After a little small talk I asked him when he got off of active duty. He looked startled and replied about six months ago then inquired as to how I knew he had been in the Military.
I asked "Army?" He said yes. I said, "Captain, am I right?" His jaw dropped and then he smiled and said, "Yeah, how do you know that?" I simply said that most all Captains have a certain style and confidence about them, that's how I knew.
Later in the conversation I asked if he wanted to come back to the Army as my S-1 and he shook his head no, saying "I've resigned my commission." I asked him why and he explained that he was a Company commander, that his BC was a toxic leader and just didn't like him no matter how much he worked or how good were his unit results. Hence he received an O.E.R. that would kill his career.
I had a good feeling about him and asked, "If I can get your commission restored would you come back into the system?"
He said that he probably would but doubted that the reversal could ever happen.
I said "We'll see" and left it at that.
After collecting his contact information and other details necessary to identify him to the Army,
I contacted SFC Fletcher and asked if she knew of a way to make that happen.
She offered that while she didn't, she knew someone from her previous unit who would.
A few days later she called and told me that if the Captain was serious, he could fill out the paperwork and she would get it in the works the next day.
All of that happened, his commission was restored, he participated in ODS, and eventually became my S-3. I was proud to stand with his wife as we pinned his Majors' Oak Leafs on his epaulets.
He retired several years ago as a full colonel and that never would have happened but for SFC Fletcher following through with what was supposed to be a near impossibility.
She also served as an Army advisor to the first-ever Family Support Program in the Division which became a model for the rest of the division to follow.
This, along with the great work of my staff and senior NCOs, resulted in our unit being number one in every measurable category in the Division within 8 months and SFC Fletcher was an invaluable asset.
SFC Fletcher, my XO, the Captain and I are still in contact and get together when we can. This would be my friend Kelly. I had volunteered to go to Managua, Nicaragua to run a bulldozer to help in the recovery of the big earthquake. As I was driving it I felt something hit my leg. I stood up and looked at the Marine that was next to my dozer who was pulling bodies out and I toppled over on top of him. I woke up in the Hospital back in Panama and Kelly was by my side. The base commander told me I was shot in the leg just below the knee. Kelly was by my side the whole time, cheering me up and making me laugh. She was an Airmen First Class and here she was taking care of a Sergeant. Not long after that I bought a diamond to give her. That was in Dec 1973 and I remember it like it was yesterday. I really didn't know much of anything about my job, to tell the truth. My first enlistment I spent the whole time in Berlin, and was shanghai'd from one position to another that had nothing to do with my MOS. I learned zero about my job. This platoon sergeant took the time to teach me everything there was to know about running a shop, from the very basics to being able to (nearly) do his job. He had all of us read manuals, regulations, and the updates. All of his platoon were the best trained he could do. Two duty stations later I was left in charge of a shop as an E4 due to the fickle finger of fate, taking over on a Wednesday. Thanks to his training I was able to take it over, work all 3 days over what should have been a 3 day weekend, and get the shop ready for an IG inspection on Monday. It was the first time that unit had received a "Commendable" rating for their Communications shop in a long while. I was instantly a hit with the chain of command. I will never forget the teachings of that sergeant, and use many of his philosophies and repeat his little sayings to myself every day. I'll go over moments when generosity was clearly at hand...

During the Crucible apparently the Company CO ensured we had one extra MRE than what recruits normally got. The DIs openly said to us we got a hookup in that sense.

An instructor/ensemble trainer who let me run my brass quintet arrangements while at the School of Music.

Any time for a birthday ball the host unit fed my band with the same food/dishes the ball guests were being served instead of shitty pizza or other fast food garbage. In one case, while in my very first band, this resulted in porterhouse steak dinners for my brass quintet (Navy Chaplains' Ball). This was more common when we were TAD/TDY for the ball and we had to stay overnight (this happened while in 29 Palms; back when that band still existed). In half of those cases we were also invited to participate in the fun part of the ball afterward.

When coming back to active duty: my former CO from 29 Palms wrote me a letter of recommendation (as was needed at the time) explaining how I'd be a great asset if I came back to active duty.

A gunny who got us hooked up with unit challenge coins after a gig. This actually inspired me to do the same at my next station when I ran a brass quintet, and most host units were rather stingy about openly giving us anything (more than half the time though all it took was me asking and we were good!). Same gunny convinced me to ask for that station when I was able to make a choice, and still stands as one of the better SNCOs I got to work with.

In the Army I'd argue my sponsor, my squad leader, 1SG, OIC, and others went above what was expected of them to ensure my transfer to the Army and base was smooth for not just me but my family as well. I had strong feelings about it as I had already spent 19 months in country. I had requested mast, seeing a Marine Captain, things did not go well and he would not allow me to go higher in the chain-of-command. I informed him that I would write my congressman. I had other problems as my mother was attempting to stop my return. That part was easily handled as I signed a waiver. Push came to shove and if I missed the ship, I would not be able to return to the Nam. I relented and shaved so I could return. As soon as I boarded the ship, I started growing it back. I was confused when the Gunny, laughing told me to grow it but I had already started. Nothing more was said until just before we landed and a letter from my congressman was delivered by the Gunny. ( They kept it secret until just before landing) He was livid and wanted to go after the Congressman. By this time I had cooled down and wrote back that if I had been the Captain, I might have done the same as combat is not a place for challenging higher ranks. I told him to drop the case. When I disembarked the ship a full-Bird-Colonel was waiting to see me. He told me if he ever saw me without a mustache, he would court-marshell me. ( He did not know I had dropped the case) I was sent to Kelo-three-one as a Scout-Sargent. My company commander liked me because I never complained about going on patrols and I did my job. He finally told me that the Colonel was calling almost daily to check on me. He wanted me on patrols as much as possible. The Captain did not say it but hinted that as long as I was alive and not wounded, the Colonel would be a problem for the Captain. He offered me a job that he knew nothing about except I would be working for the Americal Division in Chu Lai. He left the choice up to me. I took it to take the pressure off him. I spent six months with 2 Marine Pilots and another Marine Sargent. We cleared and set up Ark Light, B-52 missions. It was almost totally safe, with no hard duty and day on and one day off. The test was history, he would finish that tour manning that gun on a small boat in the heart of Vietnam. He would finish that tour and return to do a total of four tours in 4 years.

He would marry and at 40 years of age, have early stages of prostate cancer. The VA decided it was from 4 years of contact with Agent Orange.

He won all his battles in Vietnam but today at 74 years of age, he finally lost his battle with cancer.

R.I.P. I was Army, had orders for Vietnam. 3 of us caught a military hop on an Air Force plane from Offut AFB in Omaha to Vanderburg AFB in California. We had to get to Oakland to fly to Vietnam. A nice Air Forse colonel offered us a ride in his staff car, an Econoline van to Oakland. We 3 Army Pfc's walked to the van. An asshole Army major was in the van and told us to get out. He said that it was only for officers. When the Air Force Colonel arrived , he threw the asshole Army Major off and told him that us Army PFC's were his guests. The Colonel got us to the Army in time to depart to Vietnam on time. Being an Authoritarian type leader like (Sergeant Carter in Gomer Pyle) is not as effective today as it was back then, in order to motivate soldiers.
Not one style is used for all. But the most important thing is to find out what motivates your soldiers, and then use the correct type of leadership style. The Dr allowed my mom to scrub so she was there when they put me under and when I woke up. I'm sure it made her feel better about my decision to join the Navy, than it did for me. I have a unique last name and although she never said, she must have worked for him before for him to give her that kind of access. I took a chance and tracked down a number for the Ops Dept of VMGR-352 at Miramar and asked if there was any way they could help us out. In a matter of hours they put together a mission to come pick us up in El Centro and fly us up to Whidbey. Unfortunately, the mission experienced a couple of slides and the CPOs in charge got impatient and pulled the trigger on their plan to bus the Det to San Diego for commercial flights to Seattle. I was given permission to remain behind with any volunteers (which ended up being my fellow students). When the Raiders landed with a KC-130H configured for 60+ pax and only a dozen officers boarded with a cruise box full of classified (which would have been a nightmare transporting on individuals via commair, especially since I doubt any of us had courier cards), they groused a little bit, but ultimately gave us a great ride that got us in to Whidbey several hours before the rest of the det managed to arrive in their busses from Sea-Tac. Much love to the Raiders for helping out their brothers and sisters. D. (who requested I not put her full name out there or name location/situation for various reasons). When our overturned vehicle was on the verge of getting blown up, she mustered super-human strength to pull my 6', 200 Lb. unconscious frame out with just seconds to spare when it actually was hit by a huge explosion that would have cost me my life. I am forever in her debt. 2) SSG Robert Shipman - SSG Shipman actually impacted my military development more negatively than positively initially, & inspite of me having caught a full pneumonia in both lungs, he insisted I was faking it, and came to sick call/the hospital every day to cuss out the MD's who were treating me and had diagnosed the pneumonia. He promised me every day that if it was the last thing he ever did, he would keep "slackers like me" out of "his Army". Inspite of his attempts to intimidate me into doing the "duffle bag drag" and giving up, I went back into training after recovery, and if anything positive came out of my interaction with him, it's that I was all that more determined to not let him discourage me, so that actually turned out positive for my sense of determination. 3) Vietnam veteran SFC Percy Yates, Both he and SSG Shipman were my DI's in BT 1980 Ft. Knox, KY, C Co., 1st BAT, 3rd Platoon. SFC Yates kind of balanced it all with his fatherly, actions-speak-louder-than-words, matter-of-fact way, and his example of extreme professionalism, endurance and general toughness were really exceptional, to say the least. His lessons (one of my favorites being the famed "6 P's"), stayed with me my entire career, and yet he let his humanity show through now & again. Didn't yell half as much as SSG Shipman - the time to fear him was when he was silent... He arranged for me to meet a manager at the Rome Air Development Center where a lot of computer evaluations were being done. After meeting that manager (a USAF Captain) I was given access to play with all the computers they had with no restrictions and no assigned tasks. I wound up programming a small CDC computer in machine language using paper tape to store my small programs. It was great experience and I wound up having a wonderful experience as a programmer after that. I am sure the experience I had at RADC helped me be successful at both the SAC HQ and HAF levels. I had to rush her to the 5th Army General Hospital, baby and all. They admitted her, and she was listed as serious condition. Luckily, my immediate first line supervisor, Sgt. Joe Cline, and his wife, offered to watch my newborn daughter at their on base housing apartment. He took it one step further. I thought I was going to have to work, but he went up the chain of command, explained my situation to everyone, and I was granted 5 days of admin leave, and more if I needed it, so I could visit my wife in the hospital, and also take care of our daughter. Every day for almost a week, I brought my daughter to their apartment, visited my wife, and took our daughter home nightly. After my wife was released from the hospital, I was lucky enough to get a few more days of admin leave to make sure my wife was strong enough to take care of our daughter.
