SSG Shavonde Chase I would rather be in the field utilizing my radio skills than back at the base performing inventories, pm, standing inspections, etc. The more time in the field that you practice your craft, the better you will be prepared when you are doing the real thing.

I used to love Tank Gunnery, we'd go to Graff or Baumholder... or maneuvers at Hohenfels. Once I left Armor, not so much... in Signal it tended to be more dog and pony than focusing on what we did best.

Love it. I love the feeling of my rifle and the weight of my gear. It sounds stupid, but I'm an admin type Marine, so it's nice to really feel like a Marine again.

I loved it, especially moving up the ranks,you have more responsibility and helps build on your leadership skills. The things like using BAMCIS,and writing SMEAC's for Patrol planning, Convoy Planning, How to move into area using SAFE
S- Sweep clear and Set Security
A-Automatic Weapons, Set Crew Served to terrain and defense positions
F-Field's of Firer
E-Entrenchment and improvement all the time.

If you think the field is where the farmer works, you might be MI.

I have always loved getting in the field for the same reasons everyone listed. It was always a fun time when we went. There aren't any field exercises in my new job though!

I assumed way back then, the field is where you get to test your MOS skills, but it wasn't the case in my instance for some MOS's. Spending time in Active most my time was Vietnam, real life 24/7 field. But back in the states, I was assigned to an amphibious company starting up, I was meal card 001. It was 18 months before we received enough equipment and personnel to attempt to deploy in a field environment. Didn't do too bad.. We had a couple more and got a little better, but then I ETS'd.
So I join the National Guard. A watercraft Battalion. as engineer 88L.
Headquarters Company admin wanted to go into the "field" , regulations said a company must perform training in a field environment at least 4 UTA's , or 2 full days and night training, not counting Annual Training. I took off work the day before and helped out with coordination and advanced party, sometimes doing a pre set up as agressors. Ours would do an overnighter in the field, coming in Friday Eve, setting up in the field, "war games", back to the Armory Sunday, cleanup, go home really late. Being a low priority BN, field sites were hard to get at JBLM (was Ft Lewis then) so mostly February or March. Cold, wet. (another reason I have two kids born in November 2 years apart, but that's another story)
NG having only 12 weekends a year, and a two week annual training. You get a whole 26 calendar days. We also had to annual fire, so there was another weekend. Then APFT and weigh in took most of a whole day on another month. We spent Christmas weekend with annual classes, catching up on paperwork.
So you can walk into the woods, drive into the woods, land a helicopter in the woods, but you can't take your landing craft or tugboat into the woods. BN commander would always say we all go to the woods and pitch our tents; your a soldier first, and when we get around to it we'll give you a more technical job.
The BN now belongs to the Army Reserves, there is only a couple tugs and a landing vessel, a 10 ton crane; they are their own entity companies, when they go out in the "field" it's untie the boat and go do maneuvers pertaining to watercraft. The waterborne maintenance company with a floating machine shop was turned into a containerized maintenance company that now stays on or near the beach, so they get to do the "woods" thing. Been outa there close to 14 years now, I doubt I know a single person there, never looked back, moved a state away anyway.

As a Commander in Korea, I am constantly amazed by what my troops say. But recently I was rather surprised to have heard an overwhelming amount of my Soldiers saying how much they love going to the field and doing their "Army Job". Granted they are mostly 1st assignment Soldiers, and most have not deployed, but they just want to be out there on mission and training. These guys would spend half their tours here in Korea out in the field as long...

<<<<<< This guy likes going to the field and doing it expeditionary style where the current comforts are stretched to realize the restraints of being in austere places in the world. Truly I think some folks honestly believe that WiFi is present everywhere we go!
