MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Just days after the shooting that killed five service members in Chattanooga, Tennessee, armed civilians are stationing themselves outside military centers around the country.

All day- several people armed with handguns say they've been keeping watch at the Armed Forces Career Center in Manchester Township, York County.

They say they're here because our soldiers aren't safe in their own country because they're not allowed to carry weapons in their local offices.

That's raised a lot of debate in recent days since the Chattanooga shooting. The marines killed did not have their weapons.

They're not allowed to have them at recruiting centers. Thats because of a federal regulation.
Military officials say these centers are meant to be open, welcome spaces accessible to all.
But the group out here today says- thats what makes them so vulnerable.

James Fitzgerald from York Township says, "It's sickening. These men and women are trained to defend our country. They're trained to go fight for our rights our constitution our way of life and they can't defend them self here on our soil?"

Armed civilians station themselves outside an Armed Forces Career center in Manchester Township, York County.

"When they're on their own soil they're unprotected. They put their lives on the line for us 365 days a year to protect us and now it's time for us to protect them as well," said Dylan McKenna of Springettsbury Township, York County.

The people at the center today are part of a 2nd amendment group called the 3-percenters.
And they say they're trying to organize a rotation so they can be out here in front of the center more in the coming days.

It's part protest and partly a defense effort here in our local area.

The group says they've been amazed at the outpouring from the community today as they've been out in the heat.

I'm very cynical about this, I see it as people wanting their 15 minutes of fame.

SPC Ilya Arkadiev, think twice, stop breathing, squeeze trigger, breath, realign sights and squeeze again.

Unless an attacker does some Hollywood tactic such as leaping out into the open before shooting, the first round fired will be the first indication that an attack is underway. How long do you think it will take for Target 2 to realize that he's taking fire, let go of the pretty lady's hand, move to cover, ready his weapon, identify the source(s) of incoming fire, and start returning fire effectively enough to disturb a hostile shooter's aim?

Not so much their 15 minutes of fame, LCpl Mark Lefler, as a moment of feeling relevant and important again, just like all the guys who volunteered for Vietnam because they wanted to be part of history in the making.

1LT William Clardy - I am all for people to be armed, but if you want my hypothetical opinion if I was to attack recruiting post, I would of used hand gun hidden in appendix carry, walked up to the AR 15 carriers and would of started conversation with them, build rapport, so they would drop their guard.

From personal experience I can tell that standing for hours and hours, guarding anything can make a lot of people tired and complacent. Tired and complacent people are typically are not that capable of being well vigilant.

You are right it wouldn't take long for the second shooter to realize that something is going, seeing his buddy dropped, but then it would be whoever is faster on the draw in point blank range, the AR 15 holder or someone with .45 caliber pistol. As for unarmed military personnel? I hope they have bullet proof(resistant) windows for a few shots to the typical glass door and then sticking hand inside to unlock it does not take much of effort.

However, if marines inside are armed, there is no chance for someone trying to break in. Shootout 1vs4 or 5 is suicide.

Whether they want their 15 mins of fame or not, they're out there trying to protect service members. They are exercising their 2nd Ammendment right to Bear Arms that we swore to protect. Since the Armed Forces are less than armed at the moment. If they want to get their pics taken up on twitter, facebook, etc. Let em. Don't get hung up on details of civis carrying. We lost 5 Service Members to a terrorist shooter. The American people will always have our back when we get hurt.

But hey... these are my opinions. I'm in a gun friendly state. I sleep good at night knowing my neighbors got my back.

If it's a choice of kitting up or our brothers and sisters dying unarmed, then consider me in on the mission.

CPT Aaron Kletzing, you're not following protocol. Everybody knows that when you say "Don't ask..." the way CPT Keith Steinhurst did, it's semantic short hand for "Don't ask until you've bought me a drink..."

Is this really happening? This is a little extreme if it is... Which we tend to get sometimes I think in this country when horrible things happens.

I just don't understand how recruiters... NCOs... MILITARY PERSONNEL are not capable of being trusted to be armed.... It makes absolutely no sense...

I think this is why we're not capable of being trusted to be armed.
