Mainly cause of the job I had. The housing has improved drastically. We enjoyed the house we were given. The schools for the younger children are pretty good. The amenities on base aren't robust but not sparse. The downside is you have to plan a whole day trip to go anywhere off post. I recommend living on post due to that. Californians love to commute. I don't. They have a commissary, a small town center with a clothing and sales, alterations, Pizza Hut, Subway, etc. They also have a Sam Adams restaurant on post by the bank. They have 3 main housing areas: Crackerjack Flats, Sandy basin, and Sleepy Hollow for E-7 and above. There are a couple of gyms (X1 Crossfit gym), post theater, hospital, and chapels. This is a very remote post with the main training mission being training rotational training units. We are around 40-45 minutes from I-15. We are approximately 2.5 hours from Las Vegas and 3.0 hours from San Diego. I hope this helps. Most of the leadership I have encountered in my 24 months here have been outstanding. The hardest part about Fort Irwin for me is the rotational calendar. I'm currently training in Judo to compete on the national/international level, and the rotation usually falls on major tournaments. (Dang it!)

Overall, Fort Irwin is a great post to go to school, get promoted, volunteer in the community, and enjoy the great outdoors. Deployed for most of 2005. Great little post. Everything you need is on post. Barstow (closest town) is about 30 minutes away; Victorville about an hour. I lived on Crackerjack Street, but the turned that area into enlisted housing at the end of my tour. It was a pretty good location with Mount Blackie right across the street - good running trail to the top. The Pre-school was pretty good. It had a basic medical clinic on post. If you have more complicated medical needs, you'll probably have some road trips to San Bernadino.
