Before then he used to take professional Muay Thai lessons. Everything that was every taught to him was taught to me as well so I grew up with a background in kickboxing. One thing about me is, even though I do know how to box, I prefer to not strike at anyone as I feel that brings out more aggression in your opponent. My father lives by striking and he and I disagree in combat philosophy.

Being a small guy, I was bullied often by those bigger than me. Since I am not one to hit back, I usually just gave in to their demands. As I grew older and became more comfortable with myself, I started fighting back, however, I still prefer not to strike. I feel like restraining them or submission holds can calm down your opponent better until someone of authority comes by and assesses the situation. It also looks better as grapplers are seen as someone who is defending themself rather than partaking in a fight.

When I became of age to fund my own activities, I started taking up Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) as a more passive technical art. I find the grappling and ground techniques more appealing compared to the brutal punching and kicking. I by no means discredit any striker, because to be an effective martial artist, one should learn both aspects of combat. Now I practice BJJ, Muay Thai, and boxing with more emphasis on the grappling aspect of things. I stuck with it for a year and a half, but I really wasn’t hooked on it. The sparring wasn’t hard enough to prepare a person for an actual fight. My son did it for a decade and made it to 2nd Dan. He also has a few years of MMA. Taekwondo isn’t bad and can be a good base. You just have to know what BS to discard and what to keep.

My son and I have been training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for the last three years. We’re both one stripe blue belts, but he still kicks my ass. I’m so hooked on BJJ that I don’t ever see myself quitting. That limits me to gi only BJJ in the morning classes.

I’m in a bit of a plateau right now. At the time there weren't many classes that allowed children to participate. Eventually, I wasn't allowed. I lived on military installations all my life. It was normal for guys to spar in the parks or at each others homes. Then, I took Tae Kwon Do again in HS, but it got cut because it was violent. So, here I was 52 and retired. I had a friend, 3rd Dan Kenpo, and her husband own a Tang Soo Do AIKIA school. He is a 4th Dan Tang Soo Do. I enrolled my granddaughter. Then 3-4 months later my wife and I both started to get us back into shape; working out is huge at the school. We spend 30-45 minutes, hour and a half class, just working out before MA even starts. This week marks 2 years at the school. I am a 5th gup, second stripe green. I gotta say learning all the forms at 54 is difficult. His wife, my friend, teaches weapons class on Tuesdays.
