I was with the KY National Guard working the Kentucky Derby one year. I got the luck of the draw and got to work Millionaires Row doing roving patrol. I went to one of the bars that had all the celebrities there. Brooks and Dunn, Cuba Gooding Jr., Usher, Tara Reid, Payton and Eli Manning.<br /><br />I was just taking it all in. and Kid Rock gets up from the other side of the bar and comes over and sticks his hand out and says, "I want to thank you for your service." I shook his hand and we talked for about 10 minutes. He was such a humble person and just a genuinely nice guy. I met these 2 gentlemen when they came to a local sci-fi convention in my area (same convention, different years).<br /><br />Of course I got photos with them and autographs, but what I really enjoyed was just being able to talk with them for a couple minutes about our families. I met SSG Bacon when I had just returned from Vietnam and we were standing in line outside a snack bar at Fort Hood, I turn around for a second and Nicky is there in his Class A's and I could not help to notice that top ribbon of blue with white stars. Col Thorness I met while volunteering at the Medal of Honor Convention a number of years ago. A class act, he is thanking me and my twin brother for our service. He had it all wrong as he was a Prisoner of War, brutally beaten and a Medal of Honor recipient and we told him so. We lost him a few years ago. From what I know, Chet lived a modest life and kept himself out of the limelight other than on the stage with other guitarists.
