James Earl Jones, Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, and Morgan Freeman are some of my favorites, and their combined films are all high on my lists as well.
EDIT... somehow overlooked 'military' actors... guess that leaves James Earl Jones on the list, but the rest played in military movies, does that count? lol!

R. Lee Ermey might be one of the more underrated actors of our time. However, my favorite, as was the question, has to be Sam Elliot as CSM Basil Plumley.

Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood, Don Knotts, Michael Caine just to name a few. Of course, these are among those Movie Actors who were also in the military :)

Dale Dye to me, is the iconic military actor. Not only was he a Marine during Vietnam, but I would bet that he is in most military movies and you did not know it. You will have an Oh Yeah moment once you know who he is.

For me, "The Duke", John Wayne comes to my mind. He was a Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine. He was them all which makes him hard to beat in my mind.

Tom Hanks is always a great bet on a military movie. Whether he's in it or just working on it he always comes out with a great movie/mini series.
