The article is interesting in that it does make the point that mass mobilizations of effort like the Civil Rights and women's movements (and I would argue the anti-war movement as well, albeit to a lesser extent) have an impact that the elites cannot ignore. We saw it before (in the early 20th century) as unions moved from being suppressed to earning a grudging place in the power structure. Other issues like the environment also overcame opposition among the economic elites to be adopted by political elites, resulting in the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts - laws that have resulted in Los Angeles (for one example) having fewer "Code Red" air quality days in the the last three decades than it had in 1973 alone.

Sometimes these mass movements do not need people in the streets - communicating with Representatives and Senators in an informed way has a tremendous impact. One example I distinctly remember is a Senator discussing that he got three letters from regular citizens about atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons - what made him take notice of these letters was that they all spelled "strontium" correctly.

Thanks for posting this article. Someone has to fill that influence void and special interest groups and corporations did just that. If Americans actually took the time to be learn about the key topics and then voted AND held their elected representatives accountable, they would have much more impact.
