the official birthday of the Army Warrant Officer Corps in July 9th 1918, when a act of Congress established the Army Mine Planter Service as part of the Coastal Artillery Corps. A total of 40 Warrant Officers served as Masters, Mates, Chief Engineers and Assistant Engineers on each mine planting vessel. Although only one rank was authorized by Congress, in effect, three grades were created because of varying of pay grades for Masters, 1st Mates and 2nd Mates, and corresponding levels of marine engineer personnel. This is also when the official color of the Army Warrant Officer came to be brown. It emanated from the brown strands from burlap bags the Mine Planter Service personnel wore as their insignia of rank.

My father retired as a CW3 back in 1995, and the quote "experts and quiet professionals" is an understatement. I have the highest respect for all Warrant Officers as they are not only experts in their fields, but take on additional duties and tasks beyond their scope of responsibility. Many Warrant Officers begin enlisted and progress through the enlisted ranks before Commissioning. Prior to being a Warrant Officer, my father had advanced to SFC. Kudos and congratulations to all Warrant Officers out there! You have worked hard to get to where you are in your careers, and I am PROUD! Happy Birthday!

My great-uncle Ernie Pedersen was a CW2 on an Army Tugboat in the Aleutians in the Big One, he enlisted in the Army in Jan 39, a young man who joined the Army to get out of the great depression. He was at Dutch Harbor where the 1st Zero that could be made to fly again was brought down, by rifle fire from the ground

I am one of those who entered the Army in 1971 as a Pvt and entered the warrant officer corps as an SFC. As a CW2 I served as combat commander during Desert Storm with a final assignment as a company commander as a CW4. Thank you Army and thank you Warrant Officer Corps for the opportunity to serve my country.

I was one of the very early 'High School to Flight School' Warrant Officer Candidates (WOC)
I enlisted in Jul 1964 while I was still 18, and graduated from the 'Warrant Officer Fixed Wing Aviation Candidate' (WOFWAC) program in Jul '65 as a WO-1 - qualified only in the O-1 'Bird Dog'
My 1st duty assignment was in Vietnam while I was still 19 - and I wore the old brown and gold WO-1 & CW-2 'bars' - and the brown and silver CW-3 'bar' - then the silver bar with 3 'dots' - then was 'RIF'd' after being 'passed over' twice for CW-4
I spent 11 yrs & 5 mo's as an Aviation WO (before 'Aviation' became a Commissioned Officer Branch) with 12 yrs, 5 mo's, 20 days 'Active Duty'
I was only active in the 'Reserves' for a short time - and several years later I was promoted to CW-4 - but never wore the rank - as I chose not to continue in the ArNG or Reserves.

Congratulations to the Warrant Officers, I always apprehended the ride in those UH1's, and the Warrant Officers that kept our vehicles on line, and ready to move out on mission.
