He served in WWII and Korea. He was killed in 1956 when his plane crashed on a training mission. I think about my four uncles who all served in WWII. My last uncle died 17 months ago. He had lived in an assisted living facility, and some of the residents joined my brother and I at the funeral. There was also an Army Funeral Honor guard at the ceremony. Some paid the ultimate price in defense of our country and their sacrifice deserves the greatest honor a grateful nation can give them. Next in line are those who served and came out with life long disabilities as a result of their service. I live in a VA Nursing Home with seriously service disabled veterans of six different wars starting with WW Two, and continuing through the Korean War, Vietnam, both Iraq Wars, and the Afghanistan War. Some of their stories are amazing. As a long time fellow resident I have shared their pain and heard first hand about their lives, their service, and their love of country. He went on to live a fulfilling life, fought a form of Lukemia for many years until his peaceful passing in 1985. We were both assigned to the 716 Bomb Squadron at Kincheloe AFB and became good friends. Although not on the same crews we were both serving Arc Lite tours during early 1972. Since we were all friends from the same home base our crews would often get together at the O'club for post mission "wind-downs". Nutter's drink of choice, straight shot of vodka and true to form, he was always a friend to everyone. Our crews both rotated back to the states around the same time in the spring of 72. Since he was single, Nutter volunteered to fill the EWO slot on the crew of Bob Morris which was scheduled to rotate to an Arc Lite tour in late 1972, which is why he was back in theater so soon and participating in Linebacker II. After being shot down, Bob and Nutter were listed as MIA, the rest of the crew were captured. Remains of Bob and Nutter were returned in the fall of 1977. My cousin Frank enlisted in the Marine Corps before being drafted. Once the war was over he returned home. To me he was always bigger than life. He was wounded but never talked about it. He made two landings in the Pacific but never talked about them. He told one story about a buddy who was devastated by the death of a Marine in their platoon. The Marine had been tortured by the Japs very severely. After burying the body whenever they found and captured a Jap my cousins' buddy would use a machete to remove the Japs' ears. He collected them and when they left he had two gallon jugs of ears. A real gruesome story by very telling of the price paid not only by those who died but by what happened to those who survived. When I graduated from high school I joined the Corps. I served 8 years. Did things I don't talk about when I was sent to SE Asia a few times but I survived. Several medals including Purple Heart. He retired in 1959 with 23 years service. He was a hard worker, and a great provider. He didn't encourage nor discourage by brother and I to go into the military, but he did ask to tell him what the recruiters told us so he could say that is not right or ok. He passed at age 92 in 2010.
Secondly someone from my brothers High School class. Ronald G Curtis. Feb 22, 1971 KIA; wall placement, W5 line 131. He was on his last mission before coming home, coming in thru the wire at night, somehow a grenade pin caught on a bush and pulled...
Thirdly my friend from school, Paul D Kreger, Feb 17, 1972, KIA, wall placement 02W line 108. Our school bus had assigned seats, and him and I sat on the same seat row. Later, his family moved into town and he walked to school. He was an avid ball player. Almost like a ballet, he was a natural. He didn't graduate with me because of missing a couple questions on a final English exam, and was going to take an additional semester in the fall to get the diploma. We agreed that I would go make the world safer and he would finish high school and go to college as he had a pending full scholarship to play baseball. Well he didn't. I was in Vietnam and got a letter from my mom telling me Paul was in Vietnam. I was able to track him down and we were to meet the 19th. I arranged a jeep ride and we were going to get together. Then came word he was KIA on the 17th. That hurt. Still does, but I am alive and can tell his story.
Fourthly. Mike Lane. He was a class ahead of me. His brother Rick Lane was in my class. I was very good friends with Mike but so so with Rick. Roudy and rough, bully style. Mike and I got along great and he more or less protected me from the bullying in the school. Mike dropped out of school and joined the Army. He was sent to Vietnam, where he was a door gunner. The chopper was knocked down, he sustained injuries. After a time he was sent back, to the same job.
Meantime after our graduation, his brother Rick joined the Army. Rick didn't know I had, and we were both on leave heading to Vietnam, and when he told me, hey, I'm going to Vietnam and I'll be with Mike. I told him maybe we will meet up over there. He laughed and said, you? They probably won't even let you in the Army, and rode off on his motorcycle.. Well just as I got there in Cam Rahn Bay Replacement center I was in one of the clubs there and this voice I heard was haunting me. This guy was going on and on about a BS story that was actually so bizarre, but actually I knew it was true other than Rick as I had witnessed the scene back home. So I smiled, got up and walked over there and said Hi Rick, turned to the other guys and said, this guy is the real deal, him and I went to the same school, and I saw this happen. Rick about shit, Hey you Are here! It was cool because I was already a SPC and he was PFC, so I already out ranked him. We hung out for a while and he said he was leaving in the morning to meet up with Mike. They served a while together. Mike got shot up really bad, lost a lung and part of his jaw numerous shrapnel impacts and was sent home, he was discharged and ended up with 100% VA disability. Later in life when ever I went over to visit him, he would dress up in his fatigues', put on a Vietnam movie and lay his weapon over his lap. During commercials he would go out and target practice, he had several life like targets. Sometimes he pulled out his bayonet and would dig out pieces of shrapnel out of his legs, hold it up and say, they might have gotten me, but I got them.. Later he moved to Florida for 20 some odd years. He came back and found out Agent Orange was getting the best of him. He passed on around 2006. I had no one specific in mind when I was a kid. As a young Cub Scout of the latter 1960s, while the Vietnam War was raging and a part of our daily lives, it was still a distant thing mostly confined to the black & white imagery of endless Hueys in the sky, daily body-counts, and exhausted and hollow-cheeked grunts crossing the T.V. screen. Thank God my parents and other adults back then allowed us kids our innocence for as long as it lasted. But remaining innocent didn't mean I stayed ignorant. I knew people were serving and dying, among them some recent high school grads from my own little Michigan town. All I understood for sure was that we were fighting the bad guys -- evil ideologies and a violent enemy of our nation. While some may claim our execution might have had its flaws at times, we were fighting for the best-intended of reasons. Even in our little community there were already hippie "flower children" starting to raise their misguided and misdirected protests, but even as a little kid I knew we as a nation, hard as it was, were trying to do the right thing. I have known that fact to be true my entire life.

So I excitedly joined my troop of other little boys, trying hard to remember this first parade I'd ever been in was a serious honor (and trying desperately to keep in-step) marching behind the real heroes, the old veterans from our small community in the VFW or American Legion flag detail/firing party who led our annual Memorial Day parade. I knew those men as the guy who owned the Shell station, the man who ran the bowling alley, an elderly bus driver, our senior scout master, a guy who sold us insurance, and many other similar men. Most of them had served in World War II or Korea, and most of them never talked about what they'd sacrificed or suffered. We would never have known they'd ever served had it not been for their scars, that limp, or them wearing their veteran's overseas caps and carrying a flag, or defending it with long-ingrained precision with an old Springfield rifle. It was those same men around whose feet we boys scrambled to retrieve their fallen brass, after the parade and the following ceremony ended at our village cemetery. I can still remember the startling in-unison crack of those rifles. I can still remember the first time I ever smelled that military cordite.

Almost 50 years later now, well after my own USAF career and (hopefully) having gained a tad more wisdom, I have many fallen brothers and sisters in mind. There are my elder great uncles Park and Dale Odlum (Army, W.W. 2), and their kid brother Dean (USMC, W.W. 2), my Uncle Clayton Dawson (USN, W.W. 2), our neighbor friend's dad (Pvt Otto Wendt, U.S. Army, 90th Infantry Div., who survived Utah Beach and fought for months pushing the Germans back through the French hedgerow country, finally succumbing to wounds he received at the battle for Fort Koenigsmacher, in Nov '44). I'm reminded of Jack Minium, much beloved H.S. debate coach and German teacher, who as a kid had been a B-17 waist-gunner shot-down over enemy territory who endured P.O.W. status in a German Stalag. I think of my ex-father-in-law SGT John Neumann, U.S. Army, a munitions troop who manned an ammo depot far too close to the front in Korea in 1953. I recall one of my former ground combat instructors (and later USPS coworker): U.S. Army demolitions expert, SgtMaj Jim Wobig, who had fought in Vietnam and had the very visible scars to prove it. I remember countless former commanders (many of them bomber pilots with hundreds of hours over North Vietnam during Arc Light or Linebacker sorties). I remember 1Lt Marsha Allen, of the 37th ARRS, a highly skilled and professional female helicopter pilot (a rarity in 1982), who paid the ultimate price for freedom when her UH-1F had a catastrophic tail rotor failure. Her death affected a lot of us young Skycops profoundly, since I had flown (as an Airborne Fire Team member) with her only a week or so prior to her horrific crash. I recall Sgt Lawanda Thomas, a young orderly room clerk from my unit at Wueschheim Air Station (FRG), who was killed (along with her infant child) in the terrorist-caused crash of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. And I recall comrades, brothers, and friends I served with from my own 45th Missile Security Squadron: A1C Danny Kopp, SSgt Charles Huskey, SrA "Hondo" Heitkamp, and Amn Barry Holmes-- each of them line-of-duty deaths and Cold War casualties.

While thoughts of these folks (and so many, many others) are never far from my mind on a daily basis, this special day always gives me pause. I remember these and so many others whose sacrifices paid for my protection, my liberties, my freedom; and my chance to hold onto my childhood innocence for as long as I could. For that I am grateful beyond measure. I can only hope that, having myself been spared for reasons beyond my understanding, that my lifetime of ongoing service might prove worthy in the eyes of all those who've gone before me.
