Is this a real question?
Of course it is the 82nd who would win. The 82nd is the parent of the 101st, and therefore has the advantage.
And for those of you wolfing "air assault", you are lacking in understanding that assault by helicopter is only one aspect of the arts of vertical envelopment, and that the 82nd is also a practitioner of that particular art.
And for those of you claiming "If you want it done, call the 101st", excuse me but the 82nd is the one on the speed dial of the White House in case of emergencies. What other division has a mission to strategically deploy in 18 hours or less?

Just curious, how's air assault pay treating you guys? How often do you have to repel to stay current? Air Asssult school was the easiest army school I ever went to. Having said that: in 5 years at JRTC, hands down 82nd is a better unit. They are more aggressive and more technically and tactically proficient. In fact, outside of 1st cav, they were the worst unit to come through there. We had all four brigades come back, to back, to back, to back in 2006. Don't believe me? Look it up.

Why is this a discussion!? We are own the same team! There are reason for all units to be here. If you've never been in both, or any of those units, cease this discussion and mentor your Soldiers to be better. We are all "one mouse click away" from being anywhere in the Army.

Depends on the year. I remember one exercise in CA when the main attack of the 82nd turned down the wrong valley/gully......101 was waiting for them...

82nd and 101st have vastly different missions. 82nd leads the way just as 4-25 and 173rd paves the way in their respective strategic AOR for follow forces.

That being said-

101st- for when you want to be "Airborne" but are too leg to jump!

Who conducts the Airborne Assault/Airfield Seizure so the 101st can have their helicopters brought in on C-17's? Oh yeah, it the Eighty Deuce! That's who! The 101st may still wear the "Airborne" tab but, they lost that distinction YEARS ago. Sorry about that. How much is "Air Assault Pay" now anyway?

Having to base my answer on experiences I saw with my own two eyes as part of the OPFOR at NTC when both of these units came.....and even though we beat the snot out of both of them.....82nd put up a harder fight than the 101st did.

Pretty simple - only the 101st has the 187 Infantry Regiment - thus, all other divisions are inferior. There is a reason everywhere you go there is a Tori painted somewhere., and its because the RAKKASANS have been there /done that.

It states in 101st (Air Assault School) which I’m in right now Invantry is the nucleus of Air Assault task force. I’m getting my (Air Assault) tab then I’ll be over to get my (Airborne) tab then I can be a judge, but until then Air Assault!!

What’s the difference they both come down from the sky. Went to jump school in 1969, spent more time in helicopters in Vietnam and state side then jumping.

Last time the 82nd jumped into combat was 1989, the rest of the time was Air Assault. Both jumped in WW2 together and still the best.
