Have you not paid any attention in any and all safety/SHARP/EO/any other briefings given by the Cadre? Why, because SO SO SO MANY young Soldiers fresh away from home for the first time getting bigger checks than they are used to, do all kinds of stupid things and get in all kinds of trouble. Try a 19 yr old Soldier being found in the bushes outside the barracks at 0200 near death with a BAC of .27. Try one female GI in a hotel room full of male GIs and a bunch of booze is consumed and she ends up raped. Or, young Soldiers going and renting a vehicle and getting booze then getting popped for DUI. Or perhaps a young female 19 yr old Soldier reporting into AIT already drunk.......AT THE FRONT GATE OF THE BASE? These reasons are just a small number of reasons why there are restrictions in AIT. Let me introduce a basic concept. Despite the rumors and stories you've been told:
Restrictions on Soldiers during AIT is not new. They certainly go back to when I was a boot back in 1993.
It is not because somebody screwed up last cycle.
It is not because of new SHARP policies.
It is not to prevent incidents.
It is not to treat you like children.

The reason there are restrictions on AIT students is because they have one solitary mission - to learn their MOS. Distractions, video games, going out on weekends (although they generally do issue weekend passes in the latter phases of longer AIT cycles), chasing tail, alcohol, and the sundry other things that unattached very young people with money to burn will get into distract from that mission, and often end up derailing a young career before it even begins.
Focus on drinking in as much knowledge as you can so you can be an asset to your unit when you report. Freedom will follow. 1SG Private RallyPoint Member Wed, 02 Dec 2015 18:35:09 -0500 2015-12-02T18:35:09-05:00 Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 2 at 2015 6:56 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/why-all-the-restrictions-in-ait?n=1146050&urlhash=1146050

PV2 Aday, the restrictions are an attributed to your former soldiers before you. You're there to learn your MOS so you can become an technically proficient soldier as it says in our creed. To return discipline to the ranks since it's mostly all lost at AIT. There's a huge difference between the disciplined soldier going to AIT from BCT and the those going from AIT to a unit.
I recently paid a visit to one of my recruits and ran into the soldiers platoon sergeant, he 'thanked' me for the product received though being a former AIT DS he understood where the break was--AIT. Become technically and tactically proficient in your MOS...two very key traits that are looked for in promotable Soldiers. Whether the big Green Army is a lifetime commitment for you or whether or not you plan on getting out after your initial six, your MOS series is one that is HIGHLY sought after in the civilian market. You never know where it could take you. But, you have to master the basics first. And I can tell you, that communications and the like in the 25 series are vital to all elements of the battleplan, from the fireteam up to the Division/command level.

Think of it this way-if troops in contact are relying on your specific MOS and there comes a time where a very specific concept or task came up, and you were lost in the sauce because you were too hungover when your instructor was teaching said concept, you d feel like a giant turd burglar wouldnt you? That you have made it to AIT, the Army has spent considerable expense and time on your training. It is cost beneficial to get you through training without worrying about you getting into administrative or legal trouble. How to do that? Make it basic training part two. Now, with some of the longer courses, the initial few weeks are that way and then they tend to relax a bit so you won't go insane. Seriously, not knowing that there aren't Drills in AIT anymore is something SMA (Ret.) Chandler would do...because he did.

There's a lot of reasons. For starters, because their "soldierization process" is incomplete. I think that's a stupid reason, and it's made even more stupid when you're talking about training courses that are PCS moves. How do I tell someone that by the time I had his time in service I was 3 months into an Iraq deployment, but his/her soldierization hasn't happened yet? If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now.

The next reason is to remove distractions, which is also garbage, because while they can't drink or stay out overnight, they have internet in the barracks, they're allowed their computers and phones during off-duty hours (per most training BDE SOPs). Kids who don't want to learn their job get recycled or forced to reclass to something more their speed.

So why the restrictions? Because it's nearly impossible to kick out a bad soldier from IET. So we have to make nearly everything illegal so that the kids who consistently break the rules stick out like a sore thumb. Also, because we're aware that certain things that are not necessarily awful (drinking in hotel rooms, for example) are still major contributing factors to things that are awful, like rape, especially for the average demographic of the AIT student. We try to stop the bad decision train before it even leaves the station.

Something else to consider: Depending on where you go to AIT, your platoon will be something like 150-200 soldiers. At any given point in time, you might have two AIT Platoon Sergeants working for that platoon. That's 75-100 soldiers for a Staff Sergeant or Sergeant First Class to keep track of, with zero subordinate leadership (yes, you have your Platoon Guide and Student Squad Leaders, but they have no actual responsibility in the military sense.) It's nearly impossible to keep track of everyone, so the tendency is to resort to the most draconian negative leadership available and again trust that good soldiers will grasp that following the rules and passing their tests is the fastest way out the door to the real army, and the bad soldiers will stick out.

Look, the Army has invested a lot of time, money, and effort into training you, even before you graduate, and the longer the school, the more money and time involved. I see that you're a prospective 25B, which means the Army is coming out of pocket to give you some civilian certifications pertaining to your MOS, which costs the Army still more money. In the Army's eyes, you start paying back that investment the day you sign into your new unit and get to work doing your job. Anything that delays that day is wasted time and money in the eyes of big Army. Booting a soldier who stands to be rehabilitated is considered a huge waste of money. To that end, we restrict things that we've seen lead to those delays, like SHARP incidents, DUIs, and other stupidities, to try to keep as many physically and mentally capable soldiers as possible.

--an AIT Platoon Sergeant SSG Private RallyPoint Member Thu, 03 Dec 2015 17:15:27 -0500 2015-12-03T17:15:27-05:00 Response by SPC Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 3 at 2015 6:17 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/why-all-the-restrictions-in-ait?n=1148805&urlhash=1148805

AIT isn't that restricted when compared to basic. However, you will find that you will be more satisfied with your little freedoms once you are out of your training environment and will appreciate the discipline you earned (if you listen and adhere to what your leadership preaches) SFC Private RallyPoint Member Fri, 04 Dec 2015 07:54:20 -0500 2015-12-04T07:54:20-05:00 Response by SGT Jason Keefer made Dec 4 at 2015 9:50 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/why-all-the-restrictions-in-ait?n=1150199&urlhash=1150199

Ft Sill 13p course 2009... 3 day pass every weekend. Be happy you have some privileges. My little minions in OSUT get NOTHING! Nothing changes for them. It's red or white phase for the entire time. Suck it up! Can't believe that the restrictions are bugging me. Wait until you deploy! Then when your at you lowest there, just know that there is a grunt out there with less. When I'm out there and I'm at my lowest I think that some of my brothers have been killed or wounded and probably complained less that I did. When that doesn't work I think about the guys stuck in POW camps for YEARS! Getting tortured and having mock executions. After that I am pretty much revved up and ready to go. So in hindsight just ask your SGM when you see him. It will buff out! More discipline is needed for some coming out of there. Not all are bad soldiers and send soldiers to a regular reserve or national guard unit that can pass a PT test and have a better understanding of their job. For 25B's they need to leave AIT with a minimum of their security plus as this is a requirement to be able to actually do your job as a system administrator. You'll get your chance to have a life outside of training and the barracks. Concentrate on learning your MOS and your military training. I had spent 38 weeks at Fort Gordon, and yeah I can see where you're coming from with that question. But, the idea is to get you trained as fast as possible. distractions like alcohol, chicks, spare time to loaf around, etc, they get in the way of learning the course. There will be plenty of time for that later. You are still in the training phase of your military service. You have many more freedoms and capabilities than those that were there before you. Even if you think it's bad now. When I went through in 2000 we were on lockdown half the time. We were allowed out after 5+ to go and have fun. Smoking and drinking was not allowed until you hit phase 5, and you could always screw up and get sent back down. As for being able to post on RallyPoint, also use this to learn more about the Army and what those before you know. The best part of the military is always learning and sharing that knowledge. And you could have a Soldier 'borrow' a phone and rack up over $1k in phone charges (happened). Or you could have Soldiers go to the club while on phase 4 (yep, that too). It goes on and on. And if you're in a highly technical AIT and need to learn a lot in a short period of time then something like that could fail you out (you guessed it, cause that happened too). Rules are there to keep you on the right track, not to make you fail.
