Why did the FBI bother investigating the Clinton email server?

OK. So here's something that truly confounds me. The FBI discovered that Mrs. Clinton sent and received information that was classified at all levels at the time. She knowingly caused classified information to be removed from secure locations. They discovered government documents that were not returned as part of her release of documents. Her lawyers performed a forensic wipe of data devices. She lied to the public and to Congress. She did not follow even basic security protocols in handling email. Hostile governments most likely intercepted her communications. Yet they said, "no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case [against Mrs. Clinton]".
So, here's my question. Why did the FBI do the investigation? What could they have possibly found, that they didn't, to convince them that a reasonable prosecutor would take the case? My question is an honest one. So if you have the answer then please enlighten me. Because in my mind, they found all the damning evidence that there could possibly have been. I know that if it was a lowly sergeant with a secret clearance like I was, it would have been a very bad outcome for me.

Sgt Mark Ramos, the best possible explanation I have heard was that Director Comey knew that if he recommended indictment that it would change the course of political events in the country irretrievably - and he didn't want to be the one that went down in history as the one to affect a presidential election like that.

That would be cowardice on his part, but it seems plausible. Unfortunately, either way he went would change the course of history.

Because the State Department Inspector General referred their investigation to the FBI to investigate any violations of federal statutes. The FBI did not find any.

SGT They did the investigation so people can't say that she wasn't investigated. It's was a sham from the start. Everyone knew it was and it cost probably millions. Obama told us weeks ago. It just proves that certain people are above the law.

A hoop jump. If you haven't figured it out by now, the "powers" to be are going to do everything possible to keep Trump out of office. To begin with everyone figured Trump would be out of the running a long time ago, but to the main stream politicians surprise he took the cookie. Now they are pissing up a rope in fear because they couldn't buy him, and he says what he thinks. They want to insure their investments in Obama and now Clinton will pay out and anything will be done to make sure she gets in office. The fix is in.
The worst part is now Trump is dealing with the RNC and they are helping run his campaign, which is bad. They don't like him and want him out. You can see a big difference in his campaign now than it was when he started. I sometimes wonder where he stands now. I also wonder - after he wins the election will he revert to his own self and tell the "boys" to suck eggs? I don't know. Guess we got to wait and see. With the FBI's decision and findings, it is a slap in the face on justice and everything we stand for. We now know there is a double standard and that's bad.

The FBI was never going to recommended charging her, it’s the same FBI that didn’t investigate the Orlando Shooter, same one that assassinated a Family at Ruby Ridge, Same one that burned down the Davidians under Clintons watch, and then murdered the witness’s, same one that has been playing for the Democrat team and the Clintons for decades. Federal Bureau or Intimidation controlled by the Democrats answerable to the Clintons. No one has ever trusted the FBI all the way back to the Hover days. Am I surprised at this turn of events… NO, am I pissed about it Yes!

There is a difference between the denizens of the "swamp" and lowly Sergeants. The latter has no political connections as does the former. The former has granted political favors all over Congress, as well as within the government departments. The former is well protected by graft and corruption.
