Why did the Navy stop issuing ID tags?

I just finished boot camp and our whole division was disappointed that the Navy no longer issues ID tags (although they still give us the chain with a key for our locks). Even our RDCs were bitter about it. Does anyone have any thoughts or insight as to why the Navy recently did this?

Maybe because they don't foresee needing them.

I was not aware they had stopped issuing dog tags. If I were to guess why it would probably be related to modern DNA technology. Which I believe is coded into your Common Access Card (CAC). When I retired in 2001 we still had the green DD Form 2 ID Card. The Form 2 did not have a chip. We had to show our dog tags as we boarded military aircraft.
Other than that I have no idea.

When I went through last summer and graduated I literally took them off and theyve been in the pocket of my seabag every since. They arent a uniform requirement but honestly thats weird...
