My career path at the time was to drive freight like my dad did. Problem was in 1972 you had to be several years older with the appropriate driving experience to get a commercial driver license. My dad, a WWII Army Air Corps veteran, suggested I join the military to kill some time and get my service commitment out of the way. I was already an aviation enthusiast with some Civil Air Patrol cadet time and some USAF Junior ROTC in high school. Other factors were the war in Vietnam and the draft. I decided I would rather be in the USAF on my terms than the U.S. Army on their terms. My goal was to do my 4 years and come home to drive trucks. Something funny happened on the way to that goal... I liked the Air Force. My goal changed to make MSgt and retire at twenty years at the ripe old age of 37. I did exactly that, retiring at 20 years and 13 days of service in 1992. When I retired, I got a job driving for JB Hunt hauling freight in the lower 48 and Canada. I got off the truck in 1993 and 3 years later founded the company that I still run today. I worked at a deicing company at the Anchorage international airport, and most of my coworkers were retired USAF veterans. This was their second job to say nothing of their 9 to 5 and their pensions, and they all seemed relatively successful and well off. I was going through a funk that winter two years ago, and I just started asking them about how their time in the service was. They always had something to complain about, but still said that they were glad they did it, and they enjoyed the benefits of being retired from the military. I had told myself after high school that I was only going to enlist in the military as a back up plan. Despite that, I went to an Air Force recruiter at a local shopping center. She had me do an ASVAB, on which I scored well, and had me back in after a couple days. She told me I needed to drop the weight, as USAF recruiters often do these days. I considered that (and it was true at the time), but I also considered other options. I talked to a Marine recruiter whom almost tricked me into joining their delayed entry program, and a Navy recruiter, whom I was so close to joining with. I lost the weight, and instead, emailed that USAF recruiter and the rest is history... in the making. However, the US Army also offered The Army College Fund, which provided an additional $12,000. So it came down to $20,100, or $8,100. Pretty easy decision.
I found out shortly before my ETS that VEAP had been replaced by the Montgomery GI Bill and that I had enlisted during a window where I could have signed up for both. At the time, at MEPS we were lined up and sent either to the Army or the Marines. At Fort Leonard Wood, I qualified for OCS and asked for Field Artillery. My dad had started out in the Navy during WWll, but changed branches around the 60's. Became a Medic in Vietnam. I loved the ocean, so i joined my H.S. NROTC & the CAP. Wanted to be on a ship or submarine, but when i graduated they still didn't have females on board ships of any kind. Why be in the Navy if your land locked. So i left the navy's recruiter's office, the other two were closed, but the AF was open. Told him i wanted to be a Jet Mechanic he asked if i was sure, i said yes. Was told to pick up a 70 lb tool box & put it in the back of a pick-up truck. I did, so i signed a contract & was gone in 2 wks. Best choic ever. Loved my job, loved my unit.
