Why do kids have to go to school on Veterans day but not on other important dates?

Because most school districts have holidays and dates they find important (i.e MLK Day) and other dates that aren't important (i.e Veteran's Day). With that being said if I ever have a child and they're in a school district that makes them go to school on Veteran's Day, I will tell them my child will not be attending school on Veteran's Day because him/her will be out honoring the Veterans of the Armed Forces.

I think children are out of school too much as it is. I don't need my child out of school for him to understand the importance of Veteran's, Memorial, or MLK Day. Why is the importance of what a child should know about what MLK did, only good for one day? Why only honor veternas for one day? I understand what you are saying, I do, but I don't care what importance someone else places on those days.

My kids had off on election day (last week) be go to school on veterans day. Election day is more about their protection since the school is a polling location.

I think the real question is:

Why do they go to school on veterans day, which is remembering the sacrifices made by those in the past, and serving in the present, and they get to stay home for columbus day... which is in honor of a dude who discovered and already discovered place, and enslaved and killed untold numbers of these "savage" peoples?

I know not all places do it, but most have columbus day off...and I don't know anywhere that has veterans day off

It depends on the state or school district. In AZ my kids have the day off; however, I have a friends in FL and their kids go to school. I used to think every school should take the day off until I heard what they were doing in some districts. The educate the kids on the importance of our Vets and service to your country, then they host parents to an assembly and the Vets are honored at the school. Great teaching moment.
