Why do some current serving military on RallyPoint post potentially career damaging posts about past or current units?

Some current SM's less active on RP don't seem to understand the popularity of RP and/or how social media can affect them negatively - UCMJ especially.
Some don't understand how this adds to their "social profile" to affect how others perceive them and future actions.
Some don't fully realize the military is a community and word can travel - faster in smaller niche communities - SpecOps, EOD, etc..
Some don't care.
Some feel the need to expose unit's behavior after leaving the unit and negative effects seem to lessened.

Why do you ask?

I'm going to show my age a little bit here, but BACK IN MY DAY....we all sat around in the bar talking smack. Now these kids don't understand that this "bar" never forgets, it's in black and white, and it will come back to bite you in the Keiser! Wasn't it Chesty Puller that said "paperwork will be the downfall of the Marine Corps"? LOL Nowadays, it will be social media-js

I am old school I know SM are a new kind. It seems that we earned what we got good and bad, we took responsibility believe me being a SPC twice made me a much better soldier and leader. This generation seems to think they deserve anything. Not all just some so put the stones down. To bad it flows over to the military.

That's why us old codgers always wrote our gripes on cocktail napkins at the club. After a couple beers you could soak the napkin in beer and eat it. Doesn't quite work that way with todays SM.

They weren't educated about OPSEC or how to conduct oneself online well. Online, it's all too easy to get comfortable. It takes time to trace a post when there's conflict. As a Veteran, I learned how to conduct myself both off and online and I'm by no means perfect at it. People, in general, tend to act first without thinking too much regardless of location.

Outstanding question. I have active friends and family and remind them often that Social Media posts etc, are often reviewed and taken into consideration when a promotion board meets.

Honestly, I don't know. When I was in, I kept all that information in check. I kept my political positions to myself. I made sure no one could confuse my personal position as if I was speaking on behalf of the Marine Corps. Hell, even now my own parents have no idea what I actually did in the Marines because I ensured nothing potentially leaked out.

The problem with the younger generations is they have less of a filter because they grew up with this technology. We live amongst generations that actually think we care what their dinner looks like. I can't count the amount of times both while I was in and after separation where I would tell someone currently serving (mainly on facebook) that they might want to remove something they posted.

Some genuinely don't understand the implications and others give the standard "I have free speech blah blah blah" kind of answer. I help those I can, but you can't save everyone from themselves.
