Why do states and the Feds not require EV drivers to support the infrastructure they use along side ICE vehicles every day?

In example, In Texas and many other states, motor fuels tax collections have begun to fall behind in their ability to meet the ever-rising cost of the transportation projects they support.
And the issue is further exasperated with EV vehicle owners not paying their fair share to support transportation infrastructure. Tax EV owners for using transportation infostructure, just like ICE owners are charged (taxed) at every fill up.

SGM Erik Marquez, they do. Most states are increasing the registration cost of EVs. As EV sales increase in the remaining states that do not charge an extra fee will probably move to something similar.
ICE taxes for the average driver amount to about the same in the extra EV tax at registration.
This is a state issue, if your state isn't charging an EV tax, its probably because they don't have enough loss of revenue to spur the legislators into action (or enough citizen desire).

In addition what others have said about increased registration costs or additional taxes, some have been looking at changing from a gas tax to one based on mileage traveled ('Highway use fee', 'road usage charge', 'mileage-based user fee', etc).
I don't have an EV, but am a bit familiar with Virginia's Highway Use Fee* as they put it in a few years ago. They calculate based on fuel efficiency, the fuel tax at the time the car was registered, and the average miles driven.
Yeah ... there's been a lot of grumbling, but there always is when there's a fee staring you in the face instead of buried two or three layers down.
I know at the federal level, there is a 3-year pilot program* currently ongoing (started last year) to see the feasibility of the program and how it would work.
