We as a society keep electing the same officials to Congress over and over making them lifetime Politicians. Are there really not any better choices for political representative out there or is there a reason we do not see more young men and women challenging the status quo?
Congress cannot even get it together collectively to even pass a budget any more. We shouldn't as a nation put up with this type of behavior. They are not doing their jobs. They just push the real issues further and further down the road until they're not issues any more. We can blame them but what about holding ourselves accountable for their actions? They will not change because we've reelected them over and over inspite of their laissez faire method of politics. They do not fear the American public opinion and it is our own fault.

A couple reasons.
1) Each Congressman (Senate & House) represents their "District" NOT the Country. As such, what's good for Virginia (my current state) may be horrible for the other 49. Honestly I could care less about the rest of the Country when talking about my Senators and my Representative. They are here to fight against those yahoos. Of course I hate all the other Congress members.
2) Defenders advantage. Just like in war, the defense (incumbent) has an advantage. It's A LOT easier to get re-elected than elected. Things like name recognition just help.
3) Single issue voting. When you have parties that have adopted idiotic platforms that include singular issues that are divisive, people will chose specific issues to go with. Some "regions" those issues hold particular sway.

You have pretty well nailed the correct answer. The only thing I can add is under the topic of single issue voting. Here the Democrats have a great advantage. In their case, a candidate may espouse positions of many issues, even contradictory positions on the same issue. Once the Democratic voter finds agreement on that one issue that appeals to them, they vote for that candidate even though they disagree with that candidate on everything else. With Republicans, they look for the one issue on which the disagree with the candidate and decide not to vote for that candidate even though they may agree on every thing else.

We get what we vote for. People are gullible, and these days the second Golden Rule applies: He who has the gold makes the rules...
