Why do you have to submit a request to retire after 20 yrs of service?

Because once you're indef your ETS is now your RCP. Not everyone wants to stop at 20.

To give others the opportunity for the position but I have had some Leaders that I wish would have been able to stay longer because they shared their experiences and were all about mentoring and some not so much. I wish the decision could be done in a better way

Why would you not? No one but you knows when you want to retire. Others only know that you are eligible.

It is a nicer way of telling higher up that you have to come to a time in your career that your body, and mind say that it is time to hang it up.

My dad in the AF had to request it in 1986, I had to request in 08. I believe they think you want to stay in until you request to separate.

Technical Formality, Starts the Process to change your status. Surprise, Surprise, You don't retire at 20 contrary to popular opinion you go on "Retainer" in the Navy that means Transfer to the Fleet Reserve. I transferred to the Fleet Reserve in Sept 1997 I "Retired" Sept 2006.

I knew one MSgt in the Air Force that didn't request and just separated at the end of his time then he wondered why he wasn't getting payed any retirement pay. They had to bring him back on AD to go thru the retirement process. He was awesome at the technical part of his job, but not so much the paper work.

i'm retired in the reserves until i'm 60, but can collect at 59 because of my deployment, served 31 years

Because if you don't, you will not get processed for your monthly retirement check. But if you want to just EAS out...big problem to get your retirement pay stared up if you do that. Don't wait to be told, I know that you will know when it's time. IF you have to be told you stayed too long. Semper Fi.
